Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Is Nintendo's jump into mobile their new fail safe in case of a poorly selling console?

Disney is a mega entertainment conglomerate that runs the biggest movie studio in the world with several sub-studios within that structure, owns several television networks, their own theme parks, their own cruise ships, large real estate holdings, their own hotels, etc. etc.

Nintendo just makes video games and a few toys more or less. So that is not really equivalent.

What Nintendo can be, and I think they will be is one of the leading smartphone game makers in terms of money.

They will make a ton of money off smartphone games.

Well Nintendo is also entertainment company while Sony and MS are tech companies, they also wants own movies, they want their own theme parks and they already have own toys. With combination with consoles and game for mobiles they clearly wants to be more like Disney and not only gaming company, but of course that main focus will still be gaming.

Why do people like you forget that Nintendo still makes playing cards?

There's a big distinction here ... Nintendo is not making their own theme parks. They are licensing their characters to Universal for theme park attractions. No different from properties like The Simpsons, Transformers, and a dozen other IPs. They are not making their own movies either, they are going to license those characters for a film studio to then make said movie.

You seem very pessimistic, I guess you shouldn't forget that Nintendo is a strong company... It has about 30 years in the videogames industry (a very big one without a doubt) and it had periods of growth and then other periods of bad sales...

Nintendo has a lot experience, as a company they did mistakes, like the Nintendo 64 or the GameCube, but then the Wii U won 7th gen. The Wii U is a mistake, but they aren't crying and they're always pushing forward providing good software.

They know they're playing with fire (I mean, with something very important) and they won't do mistakes, but however, there's a chance between 5 - 20% they fail too. (PD: I heard a lot of times people saying: we can't forget that 10% hahaha).

They can use as much mobile as they want as long as this will be a cash cow to still creating great consoles games!

Yes they are, but again Nintendo entering movie/cartoon market (we already have Miymaotos Pikmin Short Movies), and they entering theme parks market also. Also they are not just licensing their IPs, they will be involed in devolepment of movies/cartoons and theme parks.

Which is called licensing your IP.

Nintendo doesn't have the money to build a theme park equivalent to any Disney park, the new Disney park in Shanghai cost almost $5 billion dollars alone.

They're letting Universal use the license and collaborating with them, which is nothing different from any number of other rides at Universal Studios.

You are off.

Your premise that the handheld is keeping Nintendo afloat is already flawed, because it was the 3DS that was responsible for Nintendo's first fiscal year loss in the video game business.

The next point where you are wrong is that Nintendo's mobile strategy is about subsidizing a potentially ailing console business. Those aren't their plans at all, rather it's about increased exposure for their IPs. Said exposure will get more people to buy Nintendo hardware. So it isn't a contingency plan to have another source of income, it is a plan to sell more software for their dedicated hardware.

I agree with your analysis; mobile gaming will funtion as a gate way to Nintendo consoles, but cant this strategy be two folds? 1) indirectly drive sales of hardware and, 2) generate money and indirectly function as a back up plan?

we cant be sure that people will pick up the NX just because they played Pokemon Go on their mobile phone; "casuals" seem pretty content with justgaming on their smart phones. What then? If people doesnt flock to Nintendos HW, should they simply drop out of the mobile business? Or use it as a second (or third) source of income?

I'm on Twitter @DanneSandin!

Furthermore, I think VGChartz should add a "Like"-button.

I dont think the mobile games are going to do anything for their brand awareness in terms of hard numbers. I think its ludicious to belive that the mobile devision will act as a 'gateway' to Nintendos own hardware and software.

Your mass market mobile gamers are not going to fork out the money to buy a piece of hardware just to pay again for the original version of a mobile game they are playing. They will remain content with the mobile game knowing they dont need to pay big bucks for an experience they dont need.

Ideally, mobile would help spread Nintendo IPs in a manner to attract more people to their hardware and software. But i dont see this being the case at all.

Yeah I agree with you, people aren't magically going to fork over $200+ and $40-$60 a game just because the liked a mobile version of a game. Like how many people who play Angry Birds bought the 3DS version ... like maybe 1/100?

iOS/Google Play may not have the "real" Pokemon, but if that Pokemon Go game provides some good fun, for a lot of people that will be good enough considering it's likely free.

Nintendo knows this though. They're doing this for the money, plain and simple, saying it's a "gateway" to their hardware is a nice PR spin, but it comes to down to cold, hard dollars. If they can get some gateway users of course I'm sure they'll be happy with that, but it's not like they're going to donate the billions of dollars they could make from smartphone titles alone to charity. Of course they have thought about that.

Mobile could very well become Nintendo's *primary* source of revenue in a few years, not some secondary stream.

Yes, but with Nintendo rules, Nintendo deciding whats movie/cartoon and theme parks wants.
My point still stands, they clearly wants to be more like Disney and not only gaming company, but of course that main focus will still be gaming.
