FF XIII. A small loud minority pretends to speak for everybody else who didn't care for the game.

I fixed that for you :D

It wasn't bad, it just wasn't stellar as most main series Final Fantasy games are. Metacritic and user scores seem to support this though, again, they're not saying it's bad. One can criticize a game without hating it. This certainly fits on this list, as well as Final Fantasy X.

Otherwise, I'd say zelda has a few, including II, wind waker, and skyward sword. Starcraft II wasn't universally received, but that's because the first was so popular and played to death that the second had no chance of pleasing that segment of their fanbase. The latest smash bros game faces a similar situation with the Melee elitists.

Fallout 3 and TES: Oblivion also met with some ridicule. Sims 3 & 4... Pokemon X & Y...  Super Mario Sunshine...There's plenty :p

edit: for the record, I enjoyed all of these and loved most.

Well, I think we reached the common agreement that Final Fantasy is the most divisive franchise. Apart from the original FFX-2, that game is simply broken.

Said that your "fixing" is factually wrong. FFXIII is the fourth most sold FF game, close to FF VIII. And it keeps selling, also on PC. So it has the critics and user reviews, althoug not stellars (but still great) and the popularity.

Then I am not sure what you meant with "FF X also fits on the list". Are you trying to say that FFX, the best FF ever made is inferior to, I dunno, that childish FF IX? Blasphemous people in the good ol' times were put at the stake for much less!! :p

Final Fantasy VI and IX seem to be loved by at least 80% of those who played them!

I challenge that ...

Count me in. I can't stand FF VI. I played it first on a emulator, then on PS3 and now even on mobile. The gameplay is awful. Constant encounters every 3, 4 or 5 steps, with a lame combat system (again, even with the automatic option on mobile). Once I picked up the game after a couple of months and I even run in circles keeping fighting and fighting and fighting. I thought I disliked it also due to the 2D grapics with sprites (after the Amiga I skipped the whole 2D generation because it felt alwys the same. Like playing on C64), but then I recently played Chrono Trigger.. What a refreshment! For some reason that game is much more fun. IMO obviously.

Regarding FF IX I played it in Italian. The localization is awful. Some characters talk in Italian dialects and I can't stand it. Also I hate to learn all new names for the abilities. So I gave it a chance and I bought the American version on the recent FF sales on PSN. So my judgment is currently on hold. But I can say in advance that I don't like to level up the abilities having the weapons/gear equipped and the RTE are quite annoying.

FF13 comes to minf, maybe even GTAIV (thought V was much better).

Latest non-handheld Zelda and latest ff seem to be divisive. The difference being that ff has plummeted quality wise and zelda has been constantly great.

I've never came across someone who dislikes FFIX. I've seen people complain about certain aspects of the game, but they still liked it as a whole!

If they actually enjoyed, why they didn't continued the series, buying the XIII-2 and lightning returns?

Maybe because people don't like FF sequels? FFXIII-2 still sold more than 3 million combined. Regarding FFXIII out of more than 11K user reviews in Gamespot (thus not that metacritic asylum) it has got an 8.2:

http://www.gamespot.com/reviews/final-fantasy-xiii-review/1900-6252888/

That means that vast majority voting in Gamespot gave FFXIII an 8 or more.

And for people who didn't play LR:FFXIII.. their loss. The combat system is simply great. D* Souls games compared to 5 star the Last Boss+ in hard mode are a joke. But true, it's action oriented. Some people do prefer that crappy combat system of FF VI that even plays by itself on mobile phones with the automatic mode... Pleaze.

Why they wouldn't like? They enjoyed the game then a sequel is released, the normal thing to do is buy the sequel and continue the experience.

3M is a considerable fall comparing the sales with the first FFXIII

We reap what we sow

GTA IV

Lol "childish" IX... I feel no compulsion to explain why that assessment is silly, as I suspect you're trolling me :p

I listed X because it IS divisive, perhaps moreso than any FF game in fact. The main issue is that it was indeed a good game (I enjoyed it), but it marked the most overt transition into the linear, modern RPG we see today. I finished the game in about 14 hours without a strategy guide... That's just ridiculous by RPG standards.

Given your fondness for XIII and that X is your favorite, though, it's quite clear why we disagree here. You really like the new style of RPGs, whereas I long for what Final Fantasy used to be. Neither is more correct than the other, it's just a matter of preference.

Also, we've definitely just proven that Final Fantasy is the most divisive franchise haha

We should be happy that the straight thinkers are speaking for everybody then. FFXIII turned me away from SE for over 5 years.
