Forums - Sony Discussion - Is PlayStation Just As Iconic As Nintendo?

No, not even close

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

The majority of gamers can live without a zelda or DK game. Nintendo's franchises use to be a big deal to gamers but it hasn't been in a long time. Otherwise, people would be buying their console to play those games but people don't. I think gamers as a whole care more about COD, GTA, forza, TLOU and halo than what nintendo has to offer.

Ard you sure about that? Donkey Kong Country Returns sold 6.5 million and Twilight Princess sold almost 9 million ( GC+Wii).

Yeah, I'm sure about that. DK and Zelda are iconic IPs of nintendo but that has little consumer appeal outside of nintendo's fanbase. Nintendo consoles at best are seen as a secondary consoles to the main consoles. Everyone in gaming knows of nintendo and it's IPs but not many people outside of nintendo's fanbase actually want to play those games. Nintendo's brand or it being the icon/symbol of gaming has weakened to the point that people think of playstation or xbox first when it comes to video games. The wii sold 100 million consoles. It had a real chance to build up it's core fanbase and sink their claws into people for later gens but it lost every bit of public interest with the wii u. Apparently, alot of those 100 million people could live without all of nintendo's main IPs.

A really good way to measure a consoles impact in the whole society is to visit a restaurant with a kids section. It is far more likely you will see Mario kart or Wii sports being played than little big planet. Nintendo it's the natural choice when you think about what the average family would want and it goes to show what an impact they have made.

Yup, especially in Europe, Playstation is often used instead of "gaming console". No matter what it is, many people call it playstation (especially the older ones, because to them Playstation is what they remember).

I think is more like ONLY in Europe, because in America ( the most important market) and in Japan ( the home of Sony and Nintendo ) Nintendo is stronger than Sony.

Nintendo stronger than Sony in America? Plz dude, plz...

Best seller console ever in the US:

1) DS = 54,000,000

2) PS2 = 46,000,000

3) 360 = 42,500,000

4) Wii = 42,000,000

5) GB = 40,000,000

Nintendo - 3

Sony - 1

Microsoft - 1

What do you think, who is stronger?

From a franchise/characters POV, Nintendo by a mile. If you go purely by sales numbers, then obviously Sony. But the fact that Nintendo can still make Mario games and Zelda games and that they still sell millions says a LOT about how iconic their franchises are.

Predictions for LT console sales:

PS4: 120M

XB1: 70M

WiiU: 14M

3DS: 60M

Vita: 13M

You mean the generation where Nintendo had nothing but gimmicky games that got boring fast cashing in on the Wit's inherent fad status? The XB360 was in charge until Sony closed the gap. Which it did eventually do (just not in America).

7th gen was less lopsided. Xbox and PlayStation were pretty evenly matched. If a game wasn't on both consoles, the other console had an equivalent (or at least similar) exclusive. Wii was out of luck in terms of actual games and not just cash-ins. I only bought 5 games for my Wii in the end (Smash, FF Crystal Bearers, MHtri, No More Heroes, Madworld).

Sony NEVER close the gap, the 360 is still above PS3 in lifetime shipments.

Not according to VGchartz. The numbers available on Wikipedia are 2 and three years old (with Ps3's numbers being older). With the most recent data we have for global sales, PS3 edges out 360 by just under a million.

And only one of those machines is still relevant. Just because it DID sell good doesn't mean that reflects the current market.
