Forums - Sony Discussion - Sony financial results Q1 FY15, 663 million $ profit, PS4 ships 3 million

PS4 shipments - 3.0 million

Operating Income: 96.9 Billion Yen

Net Income (profit): 82.4 Billion Yen, ~663 Million USD

"The Playstation 3, which we expected to decline, actually did not (decline much), especially sotware"

It would seem PS3 shipments, both software and hardware, did better than expected.

I'm expecting pictures to do rather badly, 2015 so far has been a horrible year (though it should be partially remedied by Spectre later this year). Besides that, I'm not really quite sure what to expect, Games & Network Services will probably be up YoY though. Music will do as it always does, Devices will be interesting to watch, as that is supposed to be one of their major segments in a few years, with them ramping up imaging sensor production. Will probably be up. I don't think there will be any major surprises this quarter though.

The pictures division also includes TV show production, for instance Better Call Saul is a Sony made show and a second season was ordered in this quarter so there's some money.

People may focus on the films but like with most media entertainment company's films are halo products while TV show production and channel ownership (Sony does/owns a lot of both) make the money.

I know, they also handle the DVD distribution of their films and shows, which makes them money outside of the box office, but it really hasn't been a good year for Sony in the box office, which certainly matters.

Tagging this.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Tagging for the future (mostly to appease Teeqoz, but also because the figures should be pretty interesting!)

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Well Sony haven't actually released anything so far to have had a bad year.  'Paul Blart mall cop 2' made over 3 times it's production budget which more than covers the losses of the cheap film 'Aloha' and they didn't really release anything else in the April-June timeframe that will be included in the results.

That's kinda the point, this year they have barely released anything, and nothing that did much in the box office. So far, this is their worst box office year in at least 15 years (don't have data past that). But like I said, Spectre should in part remedy that.

Looking forward to seeing the shipment figures, should be stagnant or down slightly. That's what still selling a console at launch price will do for you, even when you are chucking in a free game.

Overall financials, I guess I'll just keep fingers crossed and hope for the best.

54b yen is only $436m. I'm guessing they will report a loss as they have done so 56 of the last 60 quarters.
