Forums - Sony Discussion - Street Fighter V DLC characters can be earned by playing the game

This is unexpected and actually pretty big news. It does still depend on how the whole ingame economy is balanced of course, but generally this is a very positive thing in todays gaming landscape.

To be fair, this is due to the relatively small cast the game is launching. Hence, its a similar rush to market strategy Killer Instainct was criticized for.

SFV can't be 16 chracters for $60, espeically after SFIV launched with 25.

Frankly, I'm okay with this strategy because I want to play SFV soon, but I don't want it rushed. So we can play what's ready now. However, this is also fodder for those who complain about incomplete games on the market.

Street Fighter 4 didn't launch with 25 characters.  It launched with 20 characters; 18 of them were selectable (Seth and Gouken couldn't be played with).  The rest of the characters were added to the console port 6 months later.

Welcome to Marvel vs Capcom 2 for Dreamcast (And PS2/Xbox)

OMG!

I remember now :O

I remember spending so many hours to collect all characters, their artwork AND their alternate colored costumes n____n.

Dem Nostalgia!

I know, it pissed me off so much.  They made things random.  So if you didn't buy a character one time, it'd take forever for them to show up again.

I think you're comparing the original Arcade release of SFIV to SFV. But obviously most people didn't play SFIV until it came to consoles.

Hence, most people didn't play SFIV with only 18 characters. Either way, 16 characters for SFV at launch is fine assuming new characters come relatively soon.

"Most"?  Street Fighter 4 is mostly played at the arcades in Japan.  I'm not sure if you're watching Evo, but the Japanese players destroyed the competition.  I personally played Street Fighter 4 first at one of the only 2 arcades left in the Toronto area.  But yes I am comparing the arcade release to Street Fighter 5 cause this technically is the "arcade" release.  It's just a technicallity that there isn't one.  A shame too cause of what I mentioned in Japan.

It doesn't sound bad at all. I can't say I agree with locked characters being part of microtransactions, but I do love the idea of unlocking them like in the good ol' days. No more "Super" or "Ultra" versions is excellent, which means no more compatibility issues. The concept sounds interesting, as long as the requirements aren't completing 5 character trials to unlock a single character. Trials...

Pay with money or pay with time...

Oh well, at least there is still an option to get the new DLC free, which is good..

Did everyone already forget original Forza 5 economy? Or how DLC in general works to create profits? Yet people act like it's going to be "like in the old days" or at least that seems to be the assumption. Doing it "the old way" means there is no incentive to buy anything with real money. If that is the case, then why would Capcom keep creating new content possibly for years and eat up production costs as they go? Because goodwill....

I cannot imagine toilet-free life.

Kebabs have a unique attribute compared to other consumables. To unlock this effect you need to wolf down a big ass kebab really fast, like under 10 minutes or so and wait for the effect to kick in. If done correctly your movements should feel unbelievably heavy to the point where you literally cannot move at all.

I call bullshit. Sure, a lot of people in Japan play SFIV at arcades. But more than the the amount of people playing SFIV on consoles or PC? I doubt it.

Also, SF is more popular in the west.
