Forums - Gaming Discussion - By its 1 year anniversary, Destiny will have $80~$100 worth of DLC. Is this ok?

Destiny is an mmo. How much money do subscription based mmos cost in a year?

Also it's absolutely not ok to pay money. At all.

The first M in MMO stands for Massive.

And Destiny is very far removed from massive...the closest it gets is at the hub where you can dance in front of people.

I played for the first month or so, when the most people played, and at best there were 5 or 6 people in my world to partake on a daily mission (or to shoot at a cave). 5,6, or even 12 is not massive at all.

Calling Destiny an MMO is very misguided. However, it takes certain elements from MMOs such as the loot drop system, overworld events and most importantly the co-operative raids. The last one being the most reminiscent of cetain raid MMOs like WoW.

But in terms of the scope of its worlds, Destiny is not an MMO.

I honestly don't see a problem with it... unless you need to buy each and every one to play the new DLC. If not, i don't see the problem in offering consumers more content for your game.

2- Even among big MMORPGs, which arguably add much more content in one expansion than Destiny has so far, only charge $60 per year.

You honestly made that number up. Almost all mmo subscriptions are $120-150 a year in addition to $40 expansions every 12-18 months.

The 2 shitty DLCs shouldn't be lumped together with the real expansion. Destiny's system is to offer 2 paid content patches per year for  $35/40 instead of a subscription for 2 content patches.

In reality everyone needs to break it up and stop raging.

$60 base game.

2x $20 content patches

$40 expansion

Am I the only one who hates the trend of being forced online being sold dlc platforms which are incomplete games. There are a few games who have integrated the online multiplayer into the single player very well, they are complete games, and you don't have to worry about them pulling the plug on the game. I think Arma, GTA V, and even dying light all integrated their online multiplayer into the single player and single player campaigns basically hold up the game with 20+ hour campaigns. In contrast to Destiny, and Evolve, and a few others.

Not sure why people are buying this stuff because when a game is only online not only do you have to worry about them shutting down the servers which happens a whole lot (type video game server shutdowns into google and you will see long lists, some just after 1 or 2 years) or even the online community simply moving onto the next trendy things 6 months down the line. Evolve for instance, I have heard the online community is basically dead on PC.

Seriously, if you guys look for games outside of Activision, Ubisoft, and EA, there are a ton of really good games, and I mean AAA quality being put out by lesser known or smaller studios, they just don't advertise them as much.

No one buys a game to support a movement, if you do so, then that is sad. If I were to buy destiny, it would be because it is fun. If it also happens to have online only, oh well, the developer may have a good reason to do so (to combat hacking and modding for example). No one is forcing anyone to only buy games from ea or activision. I tend to buy games of all kinds, and I don't care who it comes from as long as it is fun

What is wrong with this? So PS4 has $6000 worth the games in 18 months, is that wrong? The Halo Franchise has $600 worth the games, is this a problem?

Destiny is not a single player champain akin to Uncharted or Halo, it is a living breathing universe. They are releasing new content over time, and it is a huge team of devs making this possible. Just like GT or Forza, in time more constent becomes available. They have to release the game at some point, and you get what they have completed so far. If you don't like the model, then either wait tell they announce they are stopping support for the game and buy it then, or just don't buy it.

I am not an advocate for Destiny. I played it the first month it was out, and I have not went back to it since. Once they have an actual story continuation I will be back, but I don't care about strike and MP DLC.

Gamers need to get with the times and understand this is not a bad thing. The fact that devs can continue to support a product long after its release is great for gaming. And no, the $60 you spent for the first 3 years of development does not give you any right to have the next three years of content given to you.

I see your point, but here is the problem.

1- They are pricing it WAY over what we are used from other publishers. No one is saying they should work for free, but is it ok to charge 3 times more? Why EA, Ubisoft, CD PROJEKT, Nintendo, SONY, MS and others manage to put out good content for a reasonable (or at least cheaper) price?
2- Even among big MMORPGs, which arguably add much more content in one expansion than Destiny has so far, only charge $60 per year. At best.

1) you're assuming a game needs to follow a certain model and can't do its own thing. Who cares about how many expansions come out as long as they are content filled. If you don't want it, don't buy it.

2) Destiny is also not a traditional mmo, so the comparisons aren't really fair. Plus, MMO's are more expensive then what you make them out to be.

Well then, call me sad. I will resist this trend of turning games from something that own or at least you can use when you want, how you want, or for as long as you want vs. a service which includes using it only when you are lucky enough to log into the servers, for as long as it is profitable for them, and usually them billing you multiple times for less content, you know like a service.

I'm not calling you sad, I'm calling your decision sad if anything. You are avoiding great games based on a paranoic and baseless claim. No one is charging you multiple times for less content by offering you more paid dlc. If anything, the always online is a development decision, not a business decision. Think about it, if destiny had a local mode, the system and not a server would have to keep track of the progress, meaning the progress can be locally hacked so that the hacker can change the progress and get all the rare items. Is it fair that he logs back in with every rare item against people who play the game fairly?

All the more reason why I didnt want to get into Destiny.

Pre order the game with the extensions. But now I am out. No way I am getting the next DLC
