Forums - Sony Discussion - New PS4 Model (Updated With New Info)

How did they cut power consumption by 8% and make it 10% lighter? any info on that?

Other posts are suggesting chip die reductions and more power efficient RAM, but that does not seem likely since I don't think AMD has delivered a smaller die APU yet.

Most likely this is a newly designed internal power supply. The new power supply would explain the improvements without requiring any changes to the electronics:

1) draw a bit less power

2) make the PS4 lighter

Seems cool I guess...? Kind of looks minimal with these updates.

If only we could buy a Matte faceplate for our old PS4s..... Sony pls

Yeah but, if there's never going to be another model like the original, then that means your console becomes the "original" model and thus, the most sought after by collectors. In short, it'll be more valuable.

Everything announced so far makes this a strict upgrade.

Another cost reduction... Come on holiday price cut.

Since they're not showing up at GamesCom, I expect them to announce a price cut at the Paris Games Show in October. I'm thinking $350 for the upcoming 1TB model and $300 for the 500GB model.

And we'll probably see some bundles at Paris Games Week. Black Ops 3 and Star Wars Battlefront seem like obvious choices.

Sony needs that profit more than consumers need that price drop so I'm still not 100% sure it will happen.

I like your sig pic.  But you should make the pic linkable just like I did in mine (yours) lol

From neograf:

"-Old PS4
Tomb Raider menu screen: 153 ~ 155W
Map screen: 100W

· The new PS4
Tomb Raider menu screen: 123 ~ 125W
Map screen: 80W

And less noisy overall." - Kinan

Even if this isnt as good as a new "slim" version would have been, the fact that its alot less noisy, and it uses less power, still makes for a decent update to the PS4.

Interestingly if those numbers are right, that makes it roughly 20% less power hungry than before. 8% less is only for the Power Supply rating, not the real gains. Would be interesting to compare this new model with the XB1 power consumption...

I don't know how this power consumption drop has become such a hot discussion you literally are only saving like 0.5cents per hour of usage if you are paying 20cents a kWh. So to me this is negligible.

The addition of buttons is nice I guess, although I have never accidentally ejected a disc or powered my ps4 on.

Being quieter is also nice.

This is some good news. Though I prefer the one with the glossy finish. Oh well... better get ahold of one before they discontinue them. 1TB though sounds tempting.

It's really easy to replace the drive, and a 1TB internal drive only runs around $50 or so depending on where you look.

1 TB ain't much improvement, instead of ~400 GB (~100 GB for the OS) you get ~900 GB available space... so only 125% more space.

I would go for a 1.5 TB (~1400 GB, 250% more space) to 2 TB (~1900 GB, 375% more space) HDD. The 2TB-Spinpoint M9T costs still around €/$ 100, but you get the 1.75TB-Spinpoint M9T  (~1600 GB available, 300% more space) a lot cheaper.

I bought one for €66 today (shipping + taxes included):

Looking at the manual, it appears that a hard drive swap in the PS4 is simpler than it was in the PS3. Is that accurate?

Thats correct. Swapping HDD's in the PS4 is about as simple as it gets. Sony even has detailed instructions available directly from them on how to do the upgrade.

I put a 1TB Samsung SSD in my PS4 day one, and depending on the power savings and noise of the this model, I will probably end up doing the same thing again. Day one may be able to retire to the less demanding bedroom spot quite soon.
