Forums - Gaming Discussion - Did Uplay/Origin requirement ever stopped you from buying a game?

I know this is a PC problem, but i suspect everyone games on PC now and then.

So, I was talking to a friend some days ago, when Valiant Hearts was on Sale on Steam. He told me he didn't bought it because he didn't wanted to use Uplay in his PC (even buying it on Steam, you need Uplay to play it). I've actually took a similar decision last year, when i didn't got DA:I on PC because of Origin.

Was wondering if this was common. So did you ever got a game on a different system , or just outright avoided it because of Origin/Uplay, etc?

No, why would it? If I want to play a game, then I play it. Did Origin make my playthrough of DAI any less enjoyable? Of course not, it's a thing that runs in the background and hurts no one.

If you demand respect or gratitude for your volunteer work, you're doing volunteering wrong.

Yes, virtually every game after bf4 I skipped from buying due to origin cause of how horrible the launch went and pretty much every game from ubisoft that had Uplay I skipped from buying due to Uplay... Uplay is by far the worst DRM that I have came across... Its just so bad.

If I pay $60 for a game, I expect it to work at launch... Not to wait until the stupid companies get their servers to catch up with the traffic

Theres been a few times where I've seen "free game with Origin" and I've passed on it. I love free games, but I just can't be bothered to dl it.

Care to explain why? I just installed it today and after reading this, I'm considering removing it.

I bought the entire Might and Magic franchise for $15 and the only way to redeem the keys was through uplay and steam.

Quite a while ago, I bought a game called HawX and it was an arcade flight sim and it was kinda fun, at least fun enough for me to buy the sequel. So when I bought the sequel at launch, it had Uplay installed and oh look, I couldnt get it to play for 2 weeks... $60 game... Can't get it to play for 2 weeks cause their servers sucked... And even after that, I still couldn't get it to work all the time. Plus it required me to be always online even for the single player mode and when I went offline for like a second cause my wifi back then had a hiccup, bam disconnected, kicked from the game and lost my save progress.... Fuck that shit

That sounds terrible. How they can get away with something like that is beyond me. A few years ago, when I had it installed on my PC (I now have a semi-decent laptop) and wanted to play Heroes of Might and Magic 6, I'd get disconnected in the middle of a long battle and lose all my progress. The only difference was, there was an offline mode, but you didn't get some really strong items that could help you with the game. So despite being constantly infuriated, like a person stuck in an abusive relationship I'd go back to online mode and risk losing my progress again.

Le sigh...

But anyway, thanks for replying. I'll try to make sure there is an offline for the games I bought before trying to play them.

Origin; certainly. I try to avoid most EA releases because of it, I buy the BF games and I have the Mass Effect trilogy on Origin and I think that's quite enough.

Yea I stopped supporting Ubisoft games that had Uplay completely after that experience cause specially back then when I had limited money, I spent it on a game that I couldn't even get running made me lose all faith in that Company since considering that they couldn't even get Tetris running on a ps4 without making it lag, my faith on them certainly won't be returning anytime soon. Least yours had an offline mode but mine didn't T_T

But yea, no worries. I pretty much uninstalled Uplay and the only games I really have on it are the free games that I get from Nvidia from buying their GPUs

I would have avoided AssCreed II if I had known beforehand it required UPlay.
I don't have the Origin software but do have an account thanks to Mass Effect 2, not planning on buying a game that requires the software.
I have managed to avoid GfWL and have in fact been holding out on Resident Evil 5 till it is unhooked from it, which I believe it has been recently... I am planning on buying a new laptop soon though so will probably wait till then.
