Forums - Gaming Discussion - Without Playstation, would the industry be in another crisis?

I've always thought that Sony ruined gaming.  With their emphasis on movie games and far too much JRPG titles - it seems gameplay is an afterthought or not thought of at all.

My Playstations just seem to sit there while I play my Xbox and Nintendo systems.  Needless to say, I won't be making that mistake this gen.  I'm skipping Sony completely this gen - they just aren't fun.

Hey, lets not get into a debate about what a true gamer is.

I'm just gonna point out its evident a vast majority of console gamers prefer playing games on a gamepad. The core gamers Wii had early on jumped ship. Also, the Wii has faded into obscurity more quickly than its competitors inspite of superior console sales. Maybe Wii didn't live up to the "dream" and that is part of the reason why Wii U is a failure.

"a vast majority of console gamers prefer playing games on a gamepad."

what do you think the wii mote + nunchuck is?

"The core gamers Wii had early on jumped ship"

Absolutely wrong. software sales prove it.

"Also, the Wii has faded into obscurity more quickly than its competitors inspite of superior console sales"

wii stopped selling when it stopped getting new releases. and there's no point in ignoring the slow start of the competitors.

The Wiimote + Nunchuck not a standard gamepad. That's why the Wii pro controller is a thing.

The software sales show Wii had massive decline of core software sales. Wii did a pretty good job at moving core IPs early on but it didn't last.

Wii stopped getting new releases because software sales were doing poor outside of casual and 1st party stuff. Hence, support died as the audience abandon ship and they didn't return to Wii U.

You're attempting to rewrite history to defend the Wii. I'm sure most people will agree with me because I'm spittin facts.

Thats a cop out. If Nintendo would've made a CD based console they still would've held back third parties and hammered Sega into the ground. Historically Sega was on a downward spiral. The Genesis was the peak of Segas time and that was while Nintendo was keeping developers from them. Sega of America was specifically incompetent and a very big part of why Sega fell. Sega as it stands today has only been credited with what Platinum Games makes since the arcade era died off. That was essentially their life support until they soured their relationship with third parties by rushing the Sega Saturn and pissing off third parties.

Sony actually made life easier for third parties. Third parties sell the most consoles due to their content so they should have a place at the table, not groveling at Nintendos feet and sure as hell not waiting on Sega because they could never catch up to Nintendo. Sony provided the media, they provided the funding and made it easier for partnerships to be accomplished and thats why the mass exodus of third party came to them.  I used to be on Nintendos side until I actually did the research. I still love their product, but Nintendo has issues and Sega not even being able to function as a third party just shows how bad they suck at managing a brand. Now they can barely fund console games anymore and no one did that to them. No one forced them to be so niche.

Everyone does their research. There's nothing you're saying that I'm not aware of. You're just pointing out Nintendo's weaknesses which would have obviously fixed themselves over time. Nintendo holding an iron fist over 3rd parties could only last so long.

However what Nintendo did bring to the market is something Sony and Microsoft could not dream of offering: a Nintendo influence. In the days where Nintendo was at the helm, we saw the greatest classics come to life, as 3rd parties strived to compete with Nintendo 1st party IPs. Nowadays, 3rd parties have a cop-out of their own: mega-blockbusters that will never be remembered as classics.

Just speaking of cop-outs.

We saw great classics come to life in every generation. Thats what happens. With Sony it happened exponetially to Nintendo. Great names like Metal Gear and Castlevania found a new home on Playstation. Platformers had a secondary brand where they didnt have to compete with Nintendo first party and still thrive.

Nintendo's influence if anyone has studied it is esstentially a cabron copy of the disney model, thats all. They know that kids will always be around and try to make their product around the influence of children. Sony realized that those generations are growing up hence why some called it the graduating console in the media. Microsoft felt Sony's influence so they joined in on the fight because they knew Sony had taken gaming popularity to the next level. They had relationships with third party in a positive way that Nintendo could not even fathom having because of how crazy they are about their own first party. This is why when Sony came into power the mass exodus occured.

Why did Nintendo not further pursue the CD? Was it truly piracy? Doubt it. They were sour over the deal when it was in fact Sony who was walked out on. Microsoft was smart...they didnt hide from the fact that Sony was the most influential format developer of the 90's. If Sony penetrated the mass audiences with their media Microsoft follow. Nintendo chose to fight it and suffered for it. If their deal hadn't gone sour with Sony Nintendo would've backed Sony created CD's.

Furthermore, Sony created business and their ten year plan by making new media that wouldn't otherwise be accessible to people, attainable by virtue of selling consoles at a loss and watching the media grow both affecting format sales and console sales simultaneously over a decade.

Sony screwed up the PS3 launch, but they quickly rose to the occasion and caught up to the Xbox 360 who basically used their own gameplan against them with third parties. Microsoft turned their launch around by humbling themselves and listening to fans. Why is Nintendo incapable of such flexibility?

@bold. LOL! Okay nice chat.

Metal gear became popular on playstation platforms and Castlevania  rebooted itself successfully  on non Nintendo platforms.

Yes, it would. Don't forget that the reason that gaming is such a mainstream hobby now is because of the playstation. I think that if it didn't come along, gamers would have been a "basement"-only activity. Now, we see Jessie playing Rage in Breaking Bad, Kevin Spacey playing CoD in House of Cards or Adam Sandler playing Shadow of the Colossus in Reign over me.

No, somebody else would have stepped in/up.

Even Kojima admitted that the NES version of Metal Gear was one reason the series was well known and popular in the West.  Even though it was a terrible port that Kojima himself hated, it still ended up selling millions outside Japan.

Product placement isn't anything new, even Nintendo has done some in shows that are for an older audience.

Tony and AJ playing some Mario Kart 64 in the Sopranos.

Bill playing a round of Wii golf in the show True Blood.

Lauren Holly tempts us with a Gameboy in Picket Fences.

They were born on Nintendo platforms, which was my point.

Yes, but Metal Gear became a household name on Playstation, which is my point. Final Fantasy is also a household name because of Playstation as well. FInal Fantasy was already popular on Nintendo but became something bigger on Playstation. Sony used to have shares in Square Enix no different than Nintendo had on Rare. Sony gave third party a platform where they could thrive without the strangehold of playing second fiddle commercially to first party. They could be just as competitive.

Thats fine, but to admit the popularity level was on par is utterly ludicrous. Metal Gear had the chance to be as big as it was because Kojima switched to CD's instead of using cartridges just like Final Fantasy did. Thats why companies switched to Sony. Less stringent, larger base and in the beginning actually invested into formats if they were partners.
