We saw great classics come to life in every generation. Thats what happens. With Sony it happened exponetially to Nintendo. Great names like Metal Gear and Castlevania found a new home on Playstation. Platformers had a secondary brand where they didnt have to compete with Nintendo first party and still thrive.
Nintendo's influence if anyone has studied it is esstentially a cabron copy of the disney model, thats all. They know that kids will always be around and try to make their product around the influence of children. Sony realized that those generations are growing up hence why some called it the graduating console in the media. Microsoft felt Sony's influence so they joined in on the fight because they knew Sony had taken gaming popularity to the next level. They had relationships with third party in a positive way that Nintendo could not even fathom having because of how crazy they are about their own first party. This is why when Sony came into power the mass exodus occured.
Why did Nintendo not further pursue the CD? Was it truly piracy? Doubt it. They were sour over the deal when it was in fact Sony who was walked out on. Microsoft was smart...they didnt hide from the fact that Sony was the most influential format developer of the 90's. If Sony penetrated the mass audiences with their media Microsoft follow. Nintendo chose to fight it and suffered for it. If their deal hadn't gone sour with Sony Nintendo would've backed Sony created CD's.
Furthermore, Sony created business and their ten year plan by making new media that wouldn't otherwise be accessible to people, attainable by virtue of selling consoles at a loss and watching the media grow both affecting format sales and console sales simultaneously over a decade.
Sony screwed up the PS3 launch, but they quickly rose to the occasion and caught up to the Xbox 360 who basically used their own gameplan against them with third parties. Microsoft turned their launch around by humbling themselves and listening to fans. Why is Nintendo incapable of such flexibility?

Metal gear became popular on playstation platforms and Castlevania rebooted itself successfully on non Nintendo platforms.
