Not uncommon where? You are engaging with a global community here.

Something you should probably consider, too.
I know multiple families in the US, Canada, Germany, Japan, UK and Australia that on average spend around $650 at christmas, and $450 on birthdays for their kids, especially when they have few or just one child.
Not everyone is living on a shoestring.

And those families and those countries represent the average? All of those countries you mention are in the top 30 richest countries for GDP per capita. What socio-economic strata are you and your acquaintances in? It would supprise me if you were all in the global median band. Or even in the median band for all countries where the consoles are sold. Perhaps you don't really understand how rich you and your acquaintances are on a global scale. You might not be one of the 1% but you will most likely be in the upper 25%. The fact that you know multiple families in 4 regions of the globe and you know them well enough to know how much they spend on their kids every birthday and Christmas is itself strong evidence that you and your acquaintances are highly likely to be among the wealthiest 25% of people in the world. That's not "the average person".

Im a developer, i travel a lot, and make friends with people on my travels.
Most families with low numbers of children or single children can afford to spend $400-600 on them at christmas.
Some of them i would consider to be "getting by", as in, not much free funds at the end of each month, but still buy expensive gifts for their children, besides, the way you act it's like you think no kids, what so ever, received an xbox one and games during the holidays on it's launch, and even if they got just the console that was still a $500 spend.
You seem to have it in your head that i jet set around the world associating with people drunk on money and buying lavish gifts at the drop of a hat, you're simply wrong.
Frankly, consoles are a luxury and if a single child family is so hard up that they couldnt spend $500 on their child at christmas (not saying they should, but just saying, they do not physically have the ability to do so) chances are they shouldn't be spending the money they have on luxuries to begin with.
Besides, I never claimed EVERYONE can afford to do so, just that the average kid can usually get them all, if it takes one christmas and one birthday, or multiple, then so be it.
Now open your bonnet and let that bee out.
