Agreed! Never have to miss anything. Although honestly if you own a PC and primarily game on there it may not be that much of a reason to own an Xbox One, maybe for Halo 5, and a few other others.

@OP I did this last generation, all three consoles, both handhelds, and a capable gaming PC. Ended up not having much time or motivation to play the XB360 and PS3 exclusives/console exclusives. Mostly played DS, Wii, PC, and in the latter end of the generation PSP. For that reason I figured I wouldn't waste money on consoles, and instead save it for games/pc upgrades this generation. Currently I own a PC and 3DS, will be getting a Wii U next month, and a PS4/Vita when they hit $200/$90 new respectively (I'll buy refurbished for half that.) No need for an Xbone, as of yet, none of the exclusives interest me so much that I need to play them.

I agree with the OP. Currently own PC, Xbox One and PS4. Will be getting a Wii U when I can find a good deal.

Not uncommon where? You are engaging with a global community here.

Something you should probably consider, too.

I know multiple families in the US, Canada, Germany, Japan, UK and Australia that on average spend around $650 at christmas, and $450 on birthdays for their kids, especially when they have few or just one child.

Not everyone is living on a shoestring.

And those families and those countries represent the average? All of those countries you mention are in the top 30 richest countries for GDP per capita. What socio-economic strata are you and your acquaintances in? It would supprise me if you were all in the global median band. Or even in the median band for all countries where the consoles are sold. Perhaps you don't really understand how rich you and your acquaintances are on a global scale. You might not be one of the 1% but you will most likely be in the upper 25%. The fact that you know multiple families in 4 regions of the globe and you know them well enough to know how much they spend on their kids every birthday and Christmas is itself strong evidence that you and your acquaintances are highly likely to be among the wealthiest 25% of people in the world. That's not "the average person".

Im a developer, i travel a lot, and make friends with people on my travels.

Most families with low numbers of children or single children can afford to spend $400-600 on them at christmas.
Some of them i would consider to be "getting by", as in, not much free funds at the end of each month, but still buy expensive gifts for their children, besides, the way you act it's like you think no kids, what so ever, received an xbox one and games during the holidays on it's launch, and even if they got just the console that was still a $500 spend.

You seem to have it in your head that i jet set around the world associating with people drunk on money and buying lavish gifts at the drop of a hat, you're simply wrong.

Frankly, consoles are a luxury and if a single child family is so hard up that they couldnt spend $500 on their child at christmas (not saying they should, but just saying, they do not physically have the ability to do so) chances are they shouldn't be spending the money they have on luxuries to begin with.

Besides, I never claimed EVERYONE can afford to do so, just that the average kid can usually get them all, if it takes one christmas and one birthday, or multiple, then so be it.

Now open your bonnet and let that bee out.

Money is not just the problem, finding time to play all the games is just difficult especially with my job, and also i have to think my carrier not just playing games, and my future wife and children. I also a little bit active with organization in my hometown. So 2 console, one PC and and 1 handled with mobile phone games is already difficult to manage.

I agree, but I add an angle. I bought PS3 two years ago. I had bought it much earlier, but instead opted for PS2 (as the PS2 in our household was going with the owner) and the PS3 had no longer backward compatibility as it hit europe. But it is pretty good to buy the console that late: you can still get the good games (at least digital) and you already know which games are good and which are bad. So...

Buy all three - at the start of the next gen. As an added bonus: if you own PS+ you already have many of the must have games, you only face an incredible download-marathon with your new console.

EDIT: And yes, console and games will be cheap at that point.

I own every console and handheld currently and time is generally the biggest issue. This gen ive decided to be a bit more picky when it comes to buying games and ive started not worrying about buying games at launch which has somewhat solved that issue.
Im still working my way through my 6th gen backlog though so im not sure when Ill finally be caught up enough to buy and play current games on launch day.

a thousand bucks is an average birthday/christmas combined???? Man... I grew up poor...

I am in that same boat with ya.  I was lucky if my parents got me a single video game for my birthday and christmas respectively.
