I'll never understand why people want 3 nearly identical devices
This is exactly what I was thinking. Sure, it would be nice to have a lot of the features the other 2 have that Nintendo doesn't offer, but trophies and "no gimmick controller" are much less important to me than the things really want. I'll buy a PS5 or XB4 for the things they offer, I don't need the exact same thing on Nintendo's console. Having it might help get more multiplatform games on the system, but I'm more interested in VR, improved Miiverse and a region free system.
Things I would like, but aren't top priority for me:
more spec parity with the competition
ability to take screenshots and record video
Things I would rather not have:
Achievements. I prefer when such things are built into a game so that they work within that game the way the game was designed, instead of developers having to adjust the design of their games a bit to fit into the achievement system.
Unified handheld and console system. I once created a thread about wanting something like this. I was thinking of iOS devices, where the iPod touch is the portable game and the iPad is the console (just the basic idea of what I had in mind). But I've thought about it more. Some game types just work much better as portable games and some work much better on consoles. A fusion system will produce a library of games much better suited to one of those (probably handheld), while the library suited to the other kind of games will probably suffer.

Something like trophies... Getting trophies is somthing I like doing after beating a game. I would probably own a Wii U right now if there was trophies or something like that.
This is a more important reason to own or not own a Wii U than the library of games you want/don't want to play that are available on the system?
I struggle to understand this reasoning. I love games. I will want to play a game if it looks fun/awesome/unique, regardless of what platform its on. That is the biggest factor for me. I remember reading game mags, game manuals and watching other people play games when I visited their houses and just yearning to play those games. Had absolutely nothing to do with the operating system's ability to track my achievements in those games. Reading posts like this saddens me as an indie dev. If people play more for now for reasons other than how much fun a game will be, then what am I putting so much passion into developing games for? Shouldn't I just work like a typical business man and have a list of features the masses want and just do that?
How did you use to play your games before trophies and achievements were introduced?

Both of these.
I wouldn't mind their next console having more mass market appeal but seriously. I doubt Nintendo will sell consoles at much of a loss unlike Sony and Microsoft. Which kills me when I see people say essentially "I want something with PS5 specs but a Nintendo price of no more than $199" be realistic.

The thing is most people won't put their money where their mouth is so even if Nintendo obliged and made a PS5/XB4 level console next-gen, I still don't see them buying it or western AAA titles selling well on it which just puts Nintendo in another Wii U situation where exclusives are the main selling point.

I can't say as I disagree. Heck who knows we may see Sony and MS exit the dedicated console business next gen, and go with a machine with a streaming service.
I, for one, don't want the next console to be a handheld hybrid. They should be separate, only linking account, miis, and achievements (which they really need, seriously, how long has it been since Microsoft came up with this?)

I'm still going to get a Wii U, it has a few games that I'd like to play like Bayonetta 2, Mario games and Donkey Kong games... What I mean is I'd be even more excited if it had something like trophies or achivements and I probably would purchase the console earlier.
