yes but i shouldn't need an external power source. My laptop can power up multiple portable 2.5nch externals without dramas. They just need better usb ports next gen that output more amps.

Fair enough I suppose, this is a wish list after all.  Sounds like you would also like the next console to support multiple drives at the same time.  The Wii U will only run one external at a time unless you are transferring.
