Forums - PC Discussion - MMOs and Pointless Quests

I get that MMOs are huge games. I get that there are a ton of places, and a ton of things to do. Most MMOs revolve around you being just f***ing awesome. "I'm here to save the world," and all that. So why is it that every MMO I have ever played sends you on the stupidest quests? I'm supposed to be saving the world, so you going to make me go pick some herbs, or kill some boars, or something asinine like that. Why? It's not like you complete the quest and then those herbs transform into a much needed elixer, or the boars you killed were used to craft a new and (at the moment) powerful weapon. They are (to me) stupid quests, and (often) for a small miniscule amount of experience. I would much rather have a quest that says, "Such-and-such person can help you. Find him." And then when you get there he's about to be killed, and then you have to save him or the secrets he hold will die with him, and your world is doomed. That makes sense. I will do that all day. Why do MMOs put us through the stupid quests that have nothing to do with the storyline?

There's only so much story that can be packed in to an MMO though. Besides, there need to be some fairly generic quests so they are repeatable throughout the game and can be used to grind for money or something.

I'm fine with end-game "filler" quests. At least then you know you're not doing anything important. My issue is the storyline quests that involve this. Most MMOs that I have played (if not all of them) have done this. If I'm working on the storyline then don't tell me to pick five plants, and kill three boars for no reason. Either there needs to be a stated reason (see above example regarding boar tusks used to make a powerful weapon), or these quests need to be replaced with something that is worthwhile.

Maybe to get the player know about the little and most basic objects and enemies. If you know how to make a basic potion, you can learn the most complicated brews later on. If you kill small enemies early in the game, you will ggain enough levels to survive bigger challenges in the future.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

yeah i always disliked that aspect of MMOs, yeah you came here to "save the world!, you are THE CHOSEN ONE!" and then its like "ok, now go kill 15 white tigers", and im like "wait... what does that has to do with anything?"...

and then you arrive to the point were the tigers are located and there are another 50 chosen ones killing tigers... (yeah you are SO SPECIAL...).

me: "oh look... they found the exact spawn point of the tigers and now ten chosen ones are just standing there waiting for them to spawn"

yeah... after playing MMOs i ended up disliking the formula quite a lot.

And which is why I say that Runescape has some of the best quests of any MMO. The first few, low entry quests are quick and painless but almost all of them tell an interesting story. They each have their own NPCs, some more important than others, they can't be done to "grind" skills cause while they offer good rewards, its never crazy amounts of exp and they aren't repeatable.

Once you get to the mid, experienced quests, a lot of story lines start to unravel, where its the origins of the Mahjarrat or the Dragonkin, etc and you are rewarded with unique weapons, locations, etc. It's mainly the reasons i come back to it for months at a time because the grandmaster (highest level quests) can be extremely challenging and interesting in terms of lore.

Also, there are no "kill 15 of these" quests. That's basically what the Slayer skill is for, killing a specific enemy multiple types for experience, rewards and good loot if your lucky. You are welcome to ignore that skill but it is a requirement for many quests.

yea, I played WoW, GW2 and FF14:ARR all when they released (might be better now), but neither of them managed to hold my attention for long, because there were soo many totally pointless quests - they largely play like what I call "housewive simulators" ("my dear, could you fetch me ...", "ofcourse, darling")

now GW2 and FF14:ARR tried to do a bit more with story, but even those quests seemed really dull to me

Are there any MMO's with quests like that monster hunter carry the egg from the dragons nest to the campsite?

i LOVE that quest

This is exactly what I am talking about. These are the main MMOs I have played as well. I can understand a previous user's comment about if you kill those boars (or whatever) you will earn experience/level up. My point is that there is a better way to do that. Give me a reason to kill the boars, and we're good... but when the fate of the world is resting on my shoulders, and you tell me to kill some boars, or pick some plants, I just don't understand it. I know the game isn't real, but I expect the character I'm playing to be real-ish. I wouldn't do that if I were that character. Why would they make a quest like that? The only thing I can think is that they got bored.

You're playing Dragon Age ,right? Good game but it's filled with a lot fluff, just like Skyrim (a little to much like Skyrim). You could finish it for like 60 to 80 hours but all of the content could probably take a lot more. You could go for different quest on your second play through but frankly they all side quest feel empty. You should just focus on the companion quests for side missions.

MMOs are designed after extensive studies to basically get you hook with a slow sense of progression through stimulating your dopamine receptors. And the "chosen one" trope doesn't work in conjunction with the gameplay.

I recently started playing Dragon Age. I noticed that the "requisition table" items are neverending, but not necessary. So far they haven't made me go on quests for no reason. Most of their quests state why you're going on it, and those reasons seem solid (e.g. Rescue missing soldiers; get horses for the army; etc). I just got to Skyhold, so maybe I'm not far enough to see the "filler" quests. But if the quests are optional, that's fine. I just don't like it when they make it part of your storyline.
