Decent list. Never had a PlayStation?

My 8th gen collection

Not a bad list but to be honest this screams GOTYs IF you aren't a PlayStation fan or fan of Sony IP's

I pretty much agree with every game from 1990-2005, then from there it gets very subjective for me. 2006 should either be Twilight Princess or Wii Sports IMO. COD4 is my pick for 2007 GOTY... like it or not it definitely had the biggest impact on the industry that year, and was fresh and even innovative back then rather than the stale yearly release it is now.

2008 goes to Fallout 3 in my book. 2009 could go to either Uncharted 2 or Batman Arkham Asylum, and 2010 is a tossup between Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead Redemption. Portal 2 was a great game, but no way does it deserve top honors over Batman Arkham City, Skyrim or Uncharted 3 for 2011. Xenoblade is tough to argue for 2012, only Far Cry 3 and Borderlands 2 come close to it. And 2013 was all about GTAV and The Last Of Us... A Link Between Worlds felt more like a remix of ALTTP that relied heavily on nostalgia rather than a truly original and unique game.

2014 has been the first year since I can remember where there is no clear GOTY winner. Nothing really stood out... there were a bunch of solid titles like MK8, SSB, Bayonetta 2, Dragon Age Inquisition, Far Cry 4, etc, peppered with heavily hyped but somewhat disappointing titles like Titanfall, Watch Dogs and Destiny.

You know I was always wondering why no one ever used the dollar sign for $ony, but then I realized they have no money so it would be pointless.

Horrible list.

Let me guess... It has something to do with the lack of Sony games?

Way too much Nintendo after 2005.

Seriously. Xeno, Mario Kart, and Zelda Between Worlds were not GOTY.

Of course, that is only my opinion.

In the future, please explain yourself. I'm glad you have a strong opinion on the matter, but you posting a hit-and-run negative comment lacking in content doesn't add anything to the conversation.

Remember forum rule #8:

  • Do not post only that Item A sucks, or that Item B is better than Item C. Give reasons why, post links to documented problems, of screenshots, or whatever you can. Similarly, do not reply to other posters with "you're wrong", or worse, “you’re an idiot/troll/fanboy.” Explain why you disagree, and perhaps point to the correct answer.

Well, to be fair, the entire list is subjective. It's based on my personal taste. Just because some of my choices coincide with the consensus pick for "GOTY" doesn't make those choices any more legitimate. There's no true answer to this question. I just made the list for fun and to jump start a conversation on great games.

As for your comment about A Link Between Worlds, I have to strongly disgree. At first glance, the game looks like a photocopy of A Link to the Past, but once you delve deeper into the game, it's clear that it has a personality all its own. There are new characters, new dungeons, a new story, and plenty of new ideas, including the "living painting" mechanic, the item rental system, and StreetPass functionality.
