Forums - Gaming Discussion - How is FFXIII's story?

I agree that the game is "too" linear. Linearity has some advantages when done right. The Last of Us is a great example of that. XIII didn't take advantage of it to tell an intense story.
Still, overall the game is good imo.

I loved the story ,I almost completed the game 6 times lol

I depise that game and it's sequels. It's an rpg that's not really an rpg. There's no town, shops, inns to explore. The so called game world is utterly empty. There's not many characters. It's more linear than a typical FPS game. That's just the gripes I had with it that I can remember.

You're better off buying the game used, give it a couple of days and if you don't like it, take it back for full credit.

There's nothing wrong with being linear.

The majority of rpg's aren't linear for a good reason. It doesn't work well with that genre. Some rpg games are more linear than other rpg's but the more linear types do things to distract you from it like focusing more on story, gameplay or interactions with npcs. Rpg's should never be equal or more linear than most shooters. I'm not gonna pretend that it's fine if some rpg's are balantly linear. That's where I draw the line.

XIII is everything an rpg shouldn't be except that it's pretty. If you happen to like that game and it's sequels, to each their own but don't pretend something is fine when most players of that genre don't like it.

I got 6-8 hours in, struggled with one of the bosses (was stuck with Lightning & Hope for it, big chunky monster IIRC), and said forget it. Try as I might, I couldn't get a feel for any of the characters and I have no idea what the creators were even trying to do with the plot. Lots of action with no real emotional investment or feel of danger, lots of seemingly aimless moving around from spot to spot for often unfathomable reasons...did I mention it's hard to care about anything when the only hooks you're given are unlikable characters and a setting that is only explained through a Destiny-esque grimoire?

Up until #13, I've finished even my least favorite Final Fantasy installments - #2 had a broken system, but could be worked around, #9 was absolutely dull all-around, but at least the plot was coherent - but #13 broke that streak. I could have even dealt with the aggravating Active Time Menu Surfing combat system if there was just something or someone to care about, somewhere in that hot mess.

The story is fine. A bit complicated with all the mythology in it but nothing a gamer can't handle. :)

I may make fun of Light all the time but she is a "hotrogen" along with Fang. lol!

I liked the XIII series as a whole. XIII in general though was boring.

It's bad. I mean, the idea itself is pretty good on paper, but the execution is really, really bad.

The middle of the game is literally (and I do mean literally) "we better run from the bad guys" for certain group of characters, and "we better go after the bad guys" for another group. That's all the motivation you have to keep going down the corridor for hours upon hours. No momentum, nothing.

No troll is too much for me to handle. I rehabilitate trolls, I train people. I am the Troll Whisperer.

Its pretty good despite what most say. You gotta remember the Internet is the vocal minority. They dont represent what all gamers think.

Not always but in this case it's what the majority thinks

Yeah, the majority of the Internet. Im talking about gamers around the world who aren't constantly on the Internet.

Wich is exactly what I meant. it's just not the "internet"

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Its not final fantasy 8,9,10 or 7 but its better then FFXII and kingdom hearts story. The story is what keeps you going or at least thast what kept me playing the entire series.

The Story of Final Fantasy XIII is great. It can be linked to Totalitarianism and other political things.
But sadly the Story of FF XIII is one of the few good things in the game.
