All of the big games have released. Eighth gen is well underway. What were your top 10 games released between January 2014 and Dec 2014? Preferably, games you've actually played. Mine?
10. The Hyrule Warriors (Wii U): Why is it number 10? First of all, when it was announced, the idea of Wario invading the world of Zelda really repulsed me. Then, it turned out the game was just a Dynasty Warriors clone. The graphics were pretty bad and the gameplay was shallow....and yet, I kept coming back for more and more and more. It's a game that's rough around the edges but one I think I will find myself coming back to for years to come. Cia later!
9. Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (PS4): Why is it number 9? Let's just get this out of the way. I love boobies. This game had titties AND it's a great game. I'd rank it higher if it weren't just a high res version of a game I already played last year. Still, it holds up very well and is the best version of my favorite game from 2013.
8. inFamous: Second Son (PS4): Why is it number 8? Well, the game is pretty. On a technical level, it might be the most graphically impressive console game on the market. It would rank higher but the missions were pretty repetitive and the story was only decent. Quite a few tricks (ie: The fine use of the speaker, motion controls, and touch pad) make it worth a go, though.
7. South Park: The Stick of Truth (Xbox 360): Why is it number 7? I didn't really have high hopes for this game but when I saw the review scores, I got hyped. It's a simple RPG but the amount of love that went into the game really impressed me. South Park's humor is right up my alley and this game knocked The Simpsons Game right off of its perch as my favorite video game adaptation of an animated TV show that has been on the air for more than 15 years.
6. Call of Duty Advanced Warfare (Playstation 4) : Why is it number 6? A game I wasn't quite sure I wanted but was given to me by a friend at work. Turns out, Activision was able to take a franchise that I had grown kinda bored with (last one I played was Black Ops II on Wii U) and threw in all kinds of tricks. I haven't finished the campaign yet but my early playthrough has shown quite a bit of promise. Can't wait to take this one online.
5. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U) : Why is it number 5? Ever since the 80's, Nintendo has been synonymonus with platform games. Others have come and gone but nobody does it quite like them. Donkey Kong Country is the culmination of decades of platforming goodness. From the music to the tiny animations, this game is pure gold. A must for any fan of the genre.
4. Sunset Overdrive (Xbox One) : Why is it number 4? Here's a game I wasn't sure I wanted. I almost passed on it until I saw that I could create a sexy female character (did I mention that I love boobies?). At first, it seemed like the game was trying too hard to be funny but after I settled into the vibe, I really began to enjoy this one. I mean REALLY enjoy this one. Some of the most creative open world missions that I've ever encountered as well as an arsenal of weapons that any game would kill to have. It's best described as "inFamous meets Saints Row". The game is crazy fun and surprisingly deep.
3. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U) : Why is it number 3? Another game that adds a layer of polish to an already established franchise. Mario Kart 8 is one of those games that people will be playing a decade from now. The gameplay is as perfect as ever. SImple to play but only a few will master it. Those that do will always find themselves winning. Skill is the name of the game, this time. The game looks as good as it plays, too. A few online issues that still bother me to this day (Hate being kicked out of lobbies!) hold it down.
2. Titanfall (Xbox One) : Why is it number 2? The game started out pretty great. Probably my single favorite online shooter of all time. THEN, they added more to it to get me back in. It's like Call of Duty on HGH. The gameplay is lightning fast and intuitive. The Titans feel intimidating and powerful. The graphics could be better but that's not what the game is about. Titanfall is one of those games where you go in to play a single round during 30 minutes of down time and then find out the entire night has passed you by.
1. Bayonetta 2 (Wii U) : The game looks like butt. The story is all over the place. The characters are shallow. And yet, here it is. The best game I've played all year. Why is it number 1? That gameplay (and yes, I like boobies)! When you first play Bayonetta, you find yourself barely making it through the battles with your vagina intact. The forgetable enemies come at you in waves and it's hard to decipher one battle's significance over the one before it. Then, something clicks. You have this feeling of zen with the controls. Suddenly, you're elegantly dodging attacks, dishing out punishment, and exuding confidence. Bayonetta 2, in my opinion, has the most fluid controls in the genre and for the time it takes to beat it, becomes an obssession. Most fun I've had all year.
That's my list. What's yours?
*Side note: I intend to play Dragon Age (PS4), WWE 2K15 (Xbox One), GTAV (PS4), Captain Toad (Wii U), and Forza Horizon 2 (Xbox One) this year. Hope they blow me away!
