Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Prediction: Amiibo "Universe" Game Will Be Nintendo's Big Holiday 2015 Game

Calling it now ... Nintendo's big game for fall 2015 will be an Amiibo title somewhat like Skylanders that lets you scan in your amiibo and then start using the character in game. The game, unlike Smash, will be specifically made for the amiibo toy line. It will support all the amiibos over time and it will grow with new DLC added over time.

It will be a *huge* deal for Nintendo. It will be for both the Wii U and 3DS and will eventually also be for the next Nintendo platforms (Fusion).

It's just a natural leap IMO, this will also let Nintendo make amiibo toys based on characters that aren't in Smash Brothers, so they won't be limited by that.

They will unveil at E3 2015 with a new wave of amiibo toys coming for the fall.

Imagine an animated TV series based on such a game too? Could be biiiiiiiiiiiiiig. Kids will eat it up.

I'd have more faith in this prediction if Nintendo didn't say at E3 that they specifically avoided making an amiibo centric game so they can focus on cross-game functionality.

amiibo needs to have a focused game that uses recorded data from other titles to create a unique character based off its user's accomplishments. It's the perfect way to show off the usefulness and superiority of the amiibo. Anything less will be screwed by the rock and hard place dilemma. Do they piss everyone off by making amiibos tied to exclusive content that's worth buying them for, like the Spinner, or do they add subpar functions to each game and make it so nobody wants to buy them, like every non-Link amiibo in Hyrule Warriors?

The problem with cross game compatibility is say a kid buys a Pitt amiibo, but really Smash is the only game where it does anything significant. He'll get tired of that amiibo pretty quickly probably.

Besides a central "Amiibo Universe" game doesn't somehow stop the figures from being used in other games too. Best of both worlds.

I think it's gonna happen. Not only that I think it will be monstrous seller.

That and I don't really see a game in 2015 that uses the all the amiibo toys they're going to have ... like does Megaman work in Mario Party 10? Probably not, I'm guessing.

I think locking out items like the Spinner (unless you have the amiibo) is actually what will piss people off. But if its more centered around a Skylanders style game, people will be OK with the idea of "scan in the character, now you can play as he/she/it".

It has to happen if they want amiibo to come anywhere close to what Skylanders has become. I'm just saying I'd be surprised if it came out before 2016 since they were adamantly opposed to the idea just a few months ago.

What's the actual quote there if you don't mind me asking?

Besides Nintendo says a lot of things and then does a 180 all the time. For this holiday since they don't really have a "hub" game ala Skylanders, of course they're keen to point out the cross game compatibility. But that IMO certainly won't stop them from making a Skylanders style game. The truth really is they probably could not get such a game done on time for this holiday, especially if its for both Wii U AND 3DS, which I think it will be (they're going to want to sell amiibos to the much larger 3DS base, not just the small Wii U userbase).

If I was working at Nintendo I'd look into a TV animated series for such a game too (a toy line + a TV series goes together like peanut butter and jelly) ... imagine it eventually become a movie like The LEGO Movie. Could be really, really big for Nintendo and bring characters other than just Mario/Pikachu/Link to a lot of people who aren't familiar with those other characters.

Can't find the original article I was looking at but I did find this:

"What Nintendo isn't doing for its toys-to-life approach is creating a standalone game, a big difference from both Disney and Activision's approach."

I hate polygon and hate giving them traffic though.

That's because Amiibos aren't confined to SSB, supposedly there are more to come with significant features.

According to an IGN interview with Takahashi and Miyamoto, each game would have its own set of amiibo figures, but those figures can also be used in other games and may have limited functionality in the other games. How this works remains to be seen.

The limited SSB compatibility functionality are the features we are seeing for the other games.

I honestly thought they were going to announce one back at E3

That's not a quote from any Nintendo exec though that's just from polygon ... and they're right there isn't a Skylanders hub game ... yet.

But Nintendo has never said they're not working on one.

My hunch is it's probably already well into development and has been probably last year. But it wouldn't be ready for this holiday.

Amiibo were always going to work on a variety of software too. So it's not an either/or situation. Nintendo can make plenty of money both ways.

It also kinda answers the question of "what's the big 3DS game for 2015?" ... well this could be it (along with a Wii U version of course). New 3DS interfaces with amiibo right out of the box remember.

You don't think Zelda will be Nintendo's big holiday 2015 game?
