3D World being the only 3D Mario released on Wii U would be almost equal to Hyrule Warrior replacing the nextZelda as the only Zelda game.

I really hope you are right and they do release a true 3D Mario platformer. That has the potential to move literally millions of consoles just like the Zelda franchise. The longer Nintendo wait however, the more marketshare and gamers are migrating over to Sony and Microsoft. In recent weeks we have seen the Xbox One surpass the Wii U by a very very large margin. No one is going around saying the Wii U has second place locked in anymore, where if you look back to just after MK8 launched, it was the general consensus. Nintendo's competition is really picking up. They had a whole year head start and failed to capture the market. Mario and Zelda are the top two franchises that really move Nintendo consoles and as of now, a Wii U Zelda game is closer than a true 3D Mario Wii U game, and Zelda probably isn't coming out until early 2016 at the least...

Only to Nintendo fans...

I seem to remember even Sony fans thinking the same. I think it was a combination of Nintendo fans wishful thinking and Sony fans(I'm a Sony guy myself) wanting the Xbox 1 to be the least successful out of the 3.

A true Zelda is definitely coming as it has been announced officially. But I am not very optimistic for a true 3D Mario.

3D World flopped for a Mario game and did not move console at all. It put the Wii U in a very bad spot last holidays and the console is still struggling to recover from it. I hope Nintendo really understand it flopped because it was not the game true platformer fans wanted.

Mario Galaxy 2 would be so hard to surpass and would need a massive work, unlike the cheap and quicly developped 3D World. It would be a killer app. Nintendo has to do it if they fund  big project games like Bayonetta or X who will sell way less.

Oh a true Zelda is definitely in the works, I just don't believe it will arrive in 2015 at all. Maybe December 2015 at best. I hold the same sentiment for Uncharted 4 actually.

I agree that Galaxy would be very difficult to surpass.. That game was the real 3D Mario we were waiting for after Super Mario 64. A true leap in every aspect. Sunshine was good but Galaxy really was spectacular. Nintendo have their work cut out for them with this one... I don't think they should bother with incorporating the gamepad screen at all really. It is clear that games have to basically be built around the screen in order to utilize it, and even then it comes off as un-necessary(except Nintendo Land). For a single player game, the second screen doesn't bring anything new to the gamer...

I know Xbox fans always thought the Xbox One was going to overtake the Wii U. Don't know about the pure Sony fans though, so maybe you are right.

I think Sony guys see Microsoft as more of a threat than Nintendo and would prefer to have Nintendo come up 2nd rather than Microsoft. I think it stems from the 360/PS3 era where the 360 was outselling the PS3 up until a certain point. The PS3 eventually beat it but coming from the insane lead the PS2 had, I think Sony fans were abit angry lol. The Wii really was in a league of its own in the 7th generation, 360 and PS3 guys knew that race was over :P

To the topic creator, to call Sunshine a must-have Mario game and then to dismiss 3D World is criminal. Having played both I consider the latter considerably better than the former. 3D World is so much more than just a 3D Land sequel, I thought the community had figured that out by now. Just buy the game and you'll see how must-have is - I promise you will not be disappointed.

NSMBU is not must-have, but you know what, it's the best NSMB game there is. Find time for it some day, especially if you can get it fairly cheap - I think it's a very overhated game, I had a lot of fun playing through it the last couple of weeks.

The Wii U does lack a Mario game (or any game for that matter) that hits the heights of the Galaxy duo. I hope one is in the pipeline, but who knows. For now my main hope of a game of that quality comes from Zelda rather than Mario.

NSMBU is the best game in the series, NSLU is a throwback to the challenging 2D Mario games and SM3DW is one of the most charming video games ever made.

Most people here are echoing the same sentiment I have. 3D World isn't what I envisioned for the Wii U Mario, but it IS a must have game.

GameCube is the only Nintendo console to not have a must-have Mario platformer. Super Mario Sunshine was pretty mediocre, while 3D World is a blast to play.

i regard 3D world as the best 3D mario game so for me that is a must have, NSMBU is also fantastic as is it's DLC NSLU.

Sunshine for Gamecube wasn't must have either, so the Wii-U wouldn't be the first. It could be the first one without a real Mario centered platformer.

3D WORLD !!
