I think he confused the XB1 and PS4 with the Wii U ( in be for someone takes this comment seriously)

Lets take NFL games for example here.

This is what the NES was capable of.

This is what the SNES was capable of.

This is what the PS1 was capable of.

This is what the PS2 was capable of.

This is what the Xbox 360 was capable of.

And finally, the PS4.

This is what this guy is talking about. Each console jump, games were not only prettier, but they could do things unimaginable before. But as you can see, the jump to PS4/Xbone is... just, no. Games are just prettier ports of last generation's games (hell, TLOU and GTA5 don't even try to HIDE that fact). Maybe developers will shock us and start actually doing something with them, that has yet to be seen but until then, this article is spot on.

Diminishing returns.

This a defacto fact of advancing technology.

The gap between the first two is larger than the following two, and so on and so on. WIth the only thing being disputable is SNES to PS1 vs NES to SNES because this is a graphical comparison, and 2D to 3D is a perspective jump.

Article also ignores the fact, that games are coming much early in general this gen.

Not to mention a simple increase in power doesn't magically create new gameplay. Madden, for example, won't just become new because of a hardware upgrade.

I was going to reply to another one of your posts, but you get it now.  That was the entire point of the article.  In the past, new generations brought new ways to play.  That hasn't happened so much lately.  For last gen, the only things I can think of right now are online play and motion controls.

I think we are given a bad comparison with madden for this kind of article. It really doesnt show what the ps4 is more capable of then the ps3.A better comparison would be The Witcher 2 compared to The witcher 3 + this gen will only show his true colours further down its timeline. If you compare recent ps3 games to old ps3 games its a world of difference too so lets be patient and see what this gen brings us.

And yes you cant expect a jump like 2d to 3d but we can expect more immersive detailed games with a much more vibrant world.

Stupid.

NES to SNES- Same thing with better graphics, SNES to N64/PS same thing but better graphics (the fact PS used a deferent medium is irrelant in this argue because the medium was adopted to fit better graphics and textures on each game)

PS/N64 to PS2/XBOX/GC - same thing but better graphics (PS2 had a dvd player)
PS2/XBOX/GC to Wii/PS3/360 - 1st time we had a console to buy for a reason other that better graphics (being the Wii) and that fad died out and the "better graphics" consoles carried the 2nd half of the gen.

Now here we are? Same thing this gen. In fact these types of drivel articles have been written each gen.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

The cream of PC gaming in 1993 was possible on 1985 hardware.

Was that 8 years wasted? ;) As that seems to be the argument of "it's the same games with prettier graphics". All the power does is remove barriers and limitations. Whilst all the major publishers are shooting for PS3/4/360/ONE cross format releases, the design is still going to be locked into PS3/360 hardware limitations.

As others have said, the launch/first year titles on PS3/360 were all just 6th gen software with HD visuals (even the exclusives barring the odd exception like Dead Rising), however the latter stuff would have been nigh on impossible to ever get running on the PS2. The same will happen with the PS4/ONE.

There are no new ways to play this time around, and I think Sony know's this, which is why the Morpheus exists. Whether it'll be successful or not is yet to be determined.

I don't know much about The Witcher.  Are there significant gameplay changes?  Or does it play the same and just look better?

Compare the Atari 2600 to the NES.  Massive gameplay changes too numerous to name.  A scrolling screen and being able to save your game are just a few examples.

For the NES to SNES transition, I will grant that most of this power went to the graphics.  More and better colors, getting rid of flicker, adding more on screen objects, etc.  Still, there were games done that were just not possible on the NES.  Star Fox is a good example of one.  Pilotwings is another.  Basically anything with heavy Mode 7 usage.

SNES to N64 was an obvious big change.  You already mentioned that.

N64/PS to GC/PS2 allowed for the rise of the sandbox game.  Compare Grand Theft Auto 2 to GTA3.  Big open worlds were just not really possible on the previous generation.  They would have been a foggy mess, or nearly empty.  There was also a big uptick in the realism of sports games.

What about last gen?  We got motion controls with the Wii.  It could have been done on the GC though.  Everything else we got was basically the same game in a prettier package.  Which is nice.  I like good looking games.  But it doesn't really change how the game is played.  If there is something out there I am missing, I would love to hear it.

This gen?  I expect even less differences between it and the generation before.

How in the world can you say the SNES to N64 transition was the same thing but with better graphics?  Virtually every genre saw significant changes to the gameplay due to the increase in computing power.  Can you not tell the difference between 2D and 3D gameplay?

I can't say I disagree with anything that Forbes wrote.

That looks nigh unplayable.  There was good reason this game didn't come until latter.
