Well Arrietty was a pretty bland looking movie, another young witch in a fantasy world that looks EXACTLY like all the previous Ghibli.

But the responsible for both the decision to produce a poorly unoriginal movie AND then to close it are the shareholder leeches fault, they destroy everything while draining you of all your money, talent and quality.

Dude, are you fucking kidding me? Arrietty wasn't about a witch. There was no magic involved. It was The Borrowers as a Ghibli movie. The concept is little people that live in the walls of your house and take your things and that's why they disappear. It wasn't even a fantasy world.

See I'm completely confused so much their movies look similar and lack in style unlike, say, Satochi Kon's movies which are recognizable at first sight.

If Nintendo is looking to expand their merchandise and promote their IPs, this is a good chance. Buy Ghibli and make to work on an animated Mario movie, advance wars, fire emblem, fzero, pikmin animes/movies...

I know I'd rather have Ghibli doing their usual things, but before closing their anime studio I would rather seeing thier talent preserved.

Omg, this is actually a pretty good idea! Their style would fit well with Nintendo, and I think the culture would mesh well too. That said, while I could see them making an awesome Mario movie, and Pikmin would turn out great as well, and they could probably do a pretty good job with Fire Emblem, I'm not so sure about all of Nintendo's properties. I don't know that Advance Wars, Fzero, Metroid, or Star Fox would mesh well with Ghibli. Perhaps if instead of buying Ghibli they just snatched up the animation talent, and got some other good talent, and just formed their own studio. They see themselves as an entertainment company, so why not?

Look similar and lack in style? The only patern is the strong female lead in Hayao Miyazaki's movies.

The man deserves a good retirement. Too bad the studio was too dependant on him.

I like Satoshi Kon's movies too, but they don't have that spark that Miyazaki gives them. Plus he only made 4 movies so far, compared to 11 for Miyazaki, not counting all the shorts and tv series. You try making 11 movies that are completely different in style...

Damn, I read this while Tonari no Totoro was running on TV. What a coincidence.

I'm a big fan, I simply cannot believe it and think their excuse is complete bull. Last one I saw was From Up On Poppy Hill. Goro could really have continued the tradition, he has his father's eye.

What does this mean for my dream of getting a Ni No Kuni sequel???

It wasn't much of a sales success so if anything it contributed to the downfall of the studio, and probably isn't an IP that someone else will pick up and continue, sadly.

I really like From up on Poppy Hill as well. Goro is working on Ronya the robbers daughter tv series.

Maybe they would have done better if they released their movies worldwide. The wind rises was only on a few screens here, too far away for me. I'm waiting for the blu-ray to be announced. The tale of princess Kaguya and When Marnie was there, no clue if we'll ever get to see them now :/

It's official :( http://blogs.indiewire.com/thompsononhollywood/studio-ghibli-announces-closing-on-japanese-tv-20140803

The last Ghibli movie

The one before, please someone release it in the west

Give the people what they want -- a whimsical tale! When Marine Was There Flopped because it's based of a western book that nobody has heard of! And don't try and be artsy because that's why The Tale of Princess Kaguya flopped.

This is depressing.

Eh, seems like the same problem that Nintendo often has. They keep doing what they are known for and everybody complains that they always do the same thing. They try to break out of their comfort zone and try something new and everybody complains that they should just make more Mario and Metroid (or in Ghibli's case, more stuff like Spirited Away and Ponyo)...
