Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why do so many people hate indies?

Skeetys said:

People hate on indie games because they assume that when indie games are made that means big AAA titles aren't being worked on. It's mostly something misinformed gamers do. They don't know that indie games are not taking anything away from the big games, they think Sony or Microsoft are the ones actually spending their time making the indie games themselves.

The others that hate on indie games just do it to try to find something to argue about in the console wars. Example: "LoLz Sony has FloWer and JurNey! While XboNE has HaLo and GeARz! SoNy Sux"

And most of these people don't even know which games are indie and which ones aren't. I remember hearing one guy say he wasn't interested in indie games, and then turned around and praised Telltale for The Walking Dead: Season 2.

I don't fall into the category of gamers Colin is referring to (I don't think so anyway), but I do hate most indie (independent of a publisher) games. It is my opinion that 95% of indie games are terrible pieces of junk that overcrowd Steam and the Apple Store to the point that good indie games get overlooked or unfairly branded as trash. I own many indie games myself, but I had to wade through a sea of often broken mediocrity to get to the gems.

TL:DR - I like the good indie games, but most indie games suck.

I am the Playstation Avenger.

Because they are generally inferior in quality to mid/high tier games.

i think its more narrow mindedness that comes with a side effect of having a shallow gene pool.

yes there are some shitty ones, but do your research first like for any other game. duh.

"You can walk into GameStop right now, fork over $60, and get a brand-new copy of Triple-A Game X, or you can buy six $10 games on Steam, Xbox Live Arcade, or PlayStation Network, and one or two of them (at least) will likely be far better than what you just walked out of the store with."

Yeah I dunno about that far better part.

There is something I am a disappointed about. I want to LOVE Indie games. I hear all this praise about how amazing they can be and how they are a breath of fresh air in an industry full of Triple A bull. Even though I wish I could be part of the love and praise crowd, I can't like Indie games for some reason. Now I am sure a few will come along that I will enjoy, but I've been playing many Indie games the communities say are the best and I just cannot feel it. To be fair I am currently playing games that make me feel alive, (Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy, Bioshock, Dark Souls, ect) and I wish Indie games could do the same for me.

There has to be people in this camp. I am envious of the avid Indie supporter. I feel like I am being robbed or missing something important.

i dont like them for two reasons.

1. I can get similar experiences on facebook. so they pointless on consoles.
2. They digital. I only care for physical games.

It was overhyped. Hype attracts blind hate. that's all there is to it.

I think they got too much media coverage over the past few years.

1. There are gazillions of them and if each of them only gets one article, you gonna have a hard time finding anything about a game from one of the bigger publishers.

2. They are too insignificant. The vast vast majority won't get anywhere close to meaningful sales, but they still get full coverage. That's totally alright for a website whose only purpose is to write about indie stuff, but the rest of the gaming media should really calm down and filter out the ones that aren't going to get big anyway.Half of the indies shown during the MS and Sony E3 press conference weren't even worth showing to the millions watching.

I wouldn't say that I hate indie games, I have actually played and enjoyed quite a few in recent months, but what I hate is how companies (Sony more than others) are becoming too reliant on them and showcasing them as 'the next big thing' at their shows when the time could have been spent on their larger games...

Indie games are good for the industry and growth but it is beginning to get swamped with them and people are beginning to get sick of it I think...

I don't think that many people "hate" indie games. If they weren't selling well they wouldn't be coming out more and more and becoming more popular.
