Forums - Nintendo Discussion - How the Wii U could make a comeback

1) Mario Kart 8 has been in the Top 10 worldwide for 2 months now. That's _worldwide_ mind you - meaning MK8 has been in the top 10 in every region for 2 months. No one is saying Mario Kart 8 is all Nintendo needs from here on out. However, to pretend Mario Kart 8 isn't doing anything for the Wii U, let alone Nintendo themselves, is very short sighted. You also claim the Wii U is selling poorly. I'd say, in this present time, the Wii U is finally selling at acceptable numbers. So, it's no longer selling poorly. It's selling better than the Xbone.

2) You're very confused. The PS2 hype didn't kill the Dreamcast at all. The Dreamcast was still a commercial success. Sega simply went out of business. The Jaguar is a failed console. The Virtual Boy is a failed console. The 3D0 is a failed console. The Dreamcast is NOT a failed console.

3) The point of the link was to show you that Nintendo's female-centric strategy is already active. Will Animal Crossing come to the Wii U? Of course it will. Will other female-centric games from Nintendo hit the Wii U? Eventually. To assume Nintendo isn't going target the female market is just silly - especially after Nintendo has already shown their plans to do so.

4) The only FPS I've seen that pushed consoles was Halo. A large library of FPS could potentionally push consoles, but outside of Halo, this is certainly not the case.

5) Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were the only FPS from Nintendo. Turok was from Acclaim and the rest are old PC ports. The Xbox and the X360 had way more FPS than what the N64 had.

A lot of what you're saying is based on wild assumptions and misinformed opinions. You should honestly research some of the stuff you're saying so you can get an idea of whats really going on.

Wiiu is doing good only untill you factor in things like its already established library being the cheapest console and it being its second year. Even after the Kart bump its sales are poor considering.

Issue with the female centric strategy is was the wiiu was designed as that ?.  they may bring the games but will the target audience see the U as something for them is another story.

1) Yes, considering... But that's a very one-sided way to view the Wii U. You must also consider the fact that:
a) The video game market is shrinking. With the imergence of Smart Phones and Tablets into today's market, most of the casuals have jumped ship. You also have to factor in the exclusive nature of the market. Most 3rd parties are only aiming for men between the ages of 25 and 40. They aren't trying to attract the younger crowd or even women. Because of that, fewer and fewer people are interested.
b) Software sales are down - especially for the PS4. Even though the PS4 is selling a lot of hardware, it's hardly selling much software. This is very frightening, because it means consumers aren't buying PS4s to play games on it. So, what exactly are they buying it for? This is hard to pinpoint exactly.
c) The Xbone is doing much worse right out of the gate. Even with that said, the 3DS's sales have already peaked. This is a sign that video games are becoming less and less important.

If you consider all of the above, then you can see why the Wii U isn't doing as well as the GC was during the same period when the video game market had been experiencing growth.

2) Nintendo is a family company. They aim for everyone (including females). Would you have thought the original DS was designed to attract females? Of course not, but yet it did. Even the Gameboy SP attracted more females than any other console during its time. Do you think Nintendo somehow designed the system to attract females? Of course not. It was the games that attracted females. The same applies to the Wii U. The system isn't what would attract females, but rather, the games.

Male gamers have pretty much rejected the Wii U

[...]

Their big franchises aren't doing what they should be doing - selling units. Super Mario 3D World was rejected for looking just like the 3DS game (and rightfully so - with the new HD consoles we should've got something amazing like Mario 64 2 or a Galaxy game at least), the new Zelda art style is once again going to fracture the fanbase, and too few first party titles being released anyway. Donkey Kong Country: TF failed to even register on the radar as well as Pikmin 3. Mario Kart 8 was a little spike but not good enough. I doubt Smash Bros. is gonna do much as well.

Completely nonsense.

Many male gamers play Wii U. The ones that rejected Wii U are the "Dudebro" CoD gamers, and this audience will allways reject a Nintendo console. Pikmin 3 sold well enough. The Wii U is the second best selling console right now.

1 More peopel gaming on more platforms is not market shrinking, Xbox and PS set all time records.  People just use the myth of marlet shrinking as a way to excuse wiiu sales failure.

Sure they are down if you exclude digital lol.  Lets see how software sales when there some actual software to sale, or did you ecpect killzone and Titanfall to sael liek Uncharted and Halo ?

Xbox failure is easily explained, has nothing to do with any notion of people caring less about videogames.  PS4 is ahead of the PS2 in NA, likely far ahead in Europe due to gaming growth there.  Marlet is not shrinking, Nintedo just failed this gen and MS decided to shoot it self in the foot with a shootgun.

2 maybe, but focusing on females will not save wiiu sales.

Well, Mario Kart 8 kind of showed us a little comeback, Im pretty sure a slight more when Bayonetta 2 comes out also. But what guarantee will turn things around is Super Smash Bros. With Amiibo coming a long with it. When every game this holiday comes out, most likely the new install base will be more then 60k+ probably 80k per weeks :D
My guess!

I heard original Bayonetta did wonders for PS3 and 360

In order for something to make a comeback it had to be popular at one time.

Game. Set. Match.

I just can't believe some of their decisions this gen. No hard drive, crappy (but at least free) online, hatred of third parties, the lack of power but still a high price, the Gamepad which isn't good for local multiplayer (even though Nintendo emphasizes it) and is never taken advantage of, no achievements (in 2014), Zelda's new art style, Mario 3D World instead of full fledged 3D HD Mario.... I mean it's like Nintendo WANTS the Wii U to fail.

You forgot the big one though, making Smash a timed exclusive for the 3DS :P

The Dreamcast was not a commercial success. Well, I guess it was at the beginning - but by the PS2 was announced and gaining popularity, the Dreamcast was done for.

Sega literally couldn't even GIVE AWAY Dreamcasts by mid-2000. Watch the history of Dreamcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMAg46zaRbs

Sony wasn't the ONLY thing that killed the Dreamcast, but Sony was definitely the main slayer. Even if Sega had money, there was no way the Dreamcast was going to survive that generation.

And yes, I know Nintendo is female-centric with the 3DS. It says so in my OP.

And I said on the Nintendo 64. Nintendo didn't necessarily have to publish them.

But the market is shrinking. Don't you even care to research this stuff?

Only if it's free with a free game and they should pay us to play the games...

http://techcrunch.com/2014/03/09/console-crisis/

A new report from market research firm NPD shows that only 29% of “core gamers” will purchase the next generation of gaming consoles right after they are released.

And then goes the xbox setting a record for its brand and PS4 sets all time console record.  LOL Guess only 29% is quite enough.

And sales drop during a gen swich over, no way.

PS4 is ahead of PS2 in sales, X1 in not sure and once agian market contraction is only due to Wiius failure.
