Forums - PC Discussion - As Global PC Game Revenue Surpasses Consoles, How Long Should Console Makers Keep Fighting?

I don't have much to say about the article's content and it seems others do but the title irks me a little.

"As Global PC Game Revenue Surpasses Consoles, How Long Should Console Makers Keep Fighting?"

When will people give up the idea that in the games industry (or any other) you need to win for it to be worthwhile competing? The only people who care about 'winning' in this context are a very small minority of overly fervent fans.

iPhone 'wins' over pretty much any other smart phone (still i think), but that doesn't stop Samsung. Android 'wins' over iOS for mobile OS sales but it doesn't mean Apple should give in.  Why? Because they are both making money, hand over fist. Being market leader in any field is only of value insofar as it is usually associated with having higher profits, all other things being equal.

And this is what is comes down to, making money. As long as a company is making money in any given venture, why would they give in? Even if they are only making a tenth of what the guy above them is making, if there is profit to be made why would they give it up? This is how the majority of businesses in the world persist, they carve out a profitable niche without any intention of seeking explosive growth or becoming a leader in their field.

if all they do is brown grey realistic games they should give up right now.

Seriously if you show a modern game to a person from 1988 that person would say:

"Where are your games and whats with all those movies?"
AND
"NES had 12 different colors at the same time why do your new games just have 2"

PC can be really powerful, but nobody will never squeeze all that power, it's a big waste.

So delusional. PC power is used for loading - games on PC have no loading times while your console games have up to 60 second every time you enter/leave a location.

Oh dear, not this again. Its like saying the mobile games market is bigger than consoles, obviously, but they aren't in direct competition.

If there is so much potential in the PC market, why do Ubisoft, EA, Activision(not blizzard part), Rockstar and other big publishers seem to care less about PC with each passing year?

Edit: Why has Minecraft sold MORE on consoles than PC, despite launching years after?

maybe because their games are yearly copy paste crap and not PC worthy.

PC worthy lol. Seriously?

Why is there always complaints about GTA V not already being on PC?

For better or for worse, they can make more money on consoles.

I'd like to see a comparison for the revenue of AAA games cause everybody knows that a huge chunk of that PC revenue comes from MOBAs and MMOs.

Think I've read a similar piece before. Especially the Halo/Naughty Dog PC envying. Consoles aren't going anywhere. There is a demand for them and that demand is being met. Then you have to factor Nintendo into this all. Next gen may be the last non-streaming gen (for sonysoft), but even the gen after next Nintendo will still release a traditional console as that's just how they roll (unless of course they go third party, but that's another topic in and of itself). So for the foreseeable future, consoles ain't going anywhere.

Thanks jlmurph!

Jealousy is strong within a certain group of PC gamers. But that jealous makes us happy. The last of us will never come to PC. Lol. I am very delighted.

PS4 emulators exist, for the low price of free. PC gamers can very well play PS4 games, and depending how good the emulator is, close toif not exactly the same quality as PS4. You may be right, a retail version of the game may never come out. But via emulators, EVERY game is playable without a console, from current systems all the way back to the Atari 2600 (and possibly prior to!)

SO, theoretically, yes, PC gamers get to play ANY game they desire, without ever needing a console. In fact, most of the actual emulated games are on torrents, so they are free too. So, it actually means the developer is losing money by NOT making a retail version of the game for PCs.
