The truth as I see it is that all the consoles have continued from where their last Gen forebears ended, the PS3 ended very well while the Wii didn't as it got a lot of casuals onboard earlier on in its life and got tagged as a none core gamer system, a notion further helped by it being massively underpowered compared to its competition.

The Wii U is still being viewed as a kiddies/casuals console by a lot of gamers and it is not helped at all by the media, I speak from personal experience about this as I kept telling a friend at work about the Wii U (which he kept referring to as the Wii for over 6 months), then he came visiting one day and I put in 'Sonic All Star Racing transformed'' and the first sentence he uttered was 'That isn't a Wii' to which I replied, 'That is what I've been telling you for the past 6 months' , so many people have never tried the Wii U and saddle it with the Wii's legacy whereas the Wii U tries to be 'All things to all men'.

The PS4 is currently selling on hype and the legacy of the PS3 which finished the strongest in the last generation but not on its current game selection, even the expected Graphic improvements has been quite underwhelming. My younger brother for example currently regrets selling off his PS3 and a decent collection of last gen games (which includes Uncharted Drake's deception) to be an early PS4 adopter. The only game he likes so far in this current gen is NBA2k14

Sony should be careful not to get complacent with their game output or else what is going on in Japan might well spread worldwide. It seems the Japanese market is the least influenced by Hype. For them, it is all about the games unlike the 'Fanboys' of the Western world, no matter their orientation.

Speak for yourself (or your brother) when you're saying PS4 is selling on hype alone. I have a PS4, and I didn't buy it on hype alone. I bought it for Infamous: Second Son which exceeded my expectations, both graphically and gameplay wise.

I could very well say that Wii U sold on hype alone in its first two months, when it only had a minigame-like title and NSMB U, an HD version of a 3DS game.

And you would have been right if the Wii U didn't bring a massive leap over the Wii with HD and different game play possibilities in the Control pad.

Would you rate Infamous over Uncharted for example ?

Euh, I'm expecting Xbox One be on the last place of hardware selling talking about Japan of course.

Off-topic: Can someone make a Sony/Playstation doom time line of the last 10 years?

Only time Playstation was considered doomed by the media was the failed PS3 launch.  The doom quickly passed after about a year when sales picked up.  One can say the Vita now (which was first considered a 3DS killer when it was about to launch) but the PS1, PS2, and PSP never really had any doom attachments to it by the media.  As for Nintendo?   GC, DS, Wii, 3DS, and Wii U all had major doom and that Nintendo was about to die attached to it.

Huh, don't forget the PSP Go.

Nothing can top this though!

Its not Sony's fault that they jumped to HD 8 years ago with the PS3. PS4 is a huge jump over a PS3, granted you have a 1080p TV to view it on. As for that tablet controller, I prefer any DualShock over it. That tablet is so large and uninviting and doesn't even have a good touchscreen.

I wouldn't rate Infamous over Uncharted, but I do not need to do so. Just because its not better than Uncharted doesn't mean its great. Besides fact is I didn't expect it to come anywhere close to Uncharted. But it actually did, so then trhats just a plus.

Now tell me, would you rate NSMB over 3D World or MK? See how it goes both ways.

With the way last gens winner in Japan dropped the ball, I think PS4 may pull it off by having FFXXV and KH3...along with the slew of smaller RPGs

Thanks jlmurph!

Wii-U is now at 1.7 million, PS3 was at 2 million in may 2008. Once MK8 hits Wii-U will probably pass the 2m mark rather quickly, meaning Wii-U and PS3 will be equal in the same timeframe.

Now i think most people expects PS4 to outsell Wii-U in the long run meaning PS4 still has good chance to outsell the PS3. PS3 will end up at 10m+. I really wouldn't call that failing.

Has anyone actually read the OP? Probably not because it is unreadable. WTF. For god's sake try harder! It's a thread, not a youtube comment.

And no, I won't say a product that is 3 months old and has yet to bring the features has failed.

I copy pasted your comment and sent it to my friends, and now we are having a beer and laughing.

There's a bitter Sony-hate thread everyday around here. This entire situation resembles the beginning of last gen with the same players playing different roles. PS3 was (supposed to be) the top dog coming over from PS2 but it launched poorly. Wii was coming off of a poor GameCube outing and shocked the world (all the while garnering much hate from fans of other consoles). Xbox 360 was just the middle child that everyone knows is special bit being that it's neither first place nor last place it just... Exists. These same scenarios exist today with WiiU being PS3, PS4 bring Wii, and XBOX ONE still the middle child. I know XBOX ONE is last place right now but it's last place spot is far less of a shock than WiiU's tribulations.

All in all, it's just funny to see the owners of the certain consoles who were beating their chests last gen be so agitated at the fact that the console they expected to (and obviously wanted to) fail is now in first place. Ou have some guys so upset about it that they pray for Sony to go out of business so they can get the last laugh. Me myself, though I'm not a fan of WiiU not XBOX ONE I don't pray for the demise of those respected companies. Genuine hatred for a company because it makes the console that rivals your chosen platform is the ultimate act of fanboyism.
