And I think you're really overestimating it.  If fans and general audiences are complaining about the lack of Godzilla, something is wrong.  This was to not only be a movie for the fans, but to get new fans onboard.  you don't do that by barely showing what got many of us to become fans in the first place.

Also, I don't care how long it takes to get to Godzilla.  Most Godzilla movies take awhile to get to Godzilla.  Like I said, I prefer that if they are starting things off.  But, once he shows up, it needs to allow Godzilla to shine and do his thing.  NOT tease that he's about to do his thing, and then cut immediately to something less interesting.  The Godzilla series would have failed if the older movies were like the new one.

People going in with different expectations can lead to misperception and exaggeration. The majority of people seem quite happy with the film; you'll always have a vocal minority who are never pleased.

Godzilla wasn't any less of a focus in this new film than he was in Godzilla vs Mothra '92, Godzilla Final Wars, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla '74...

Actually, most people and sites I've been listening to and looking at tell me that word of mouth is mixed.  Might be why the box office dropped ~17% from Fri to Sat.  I think next weekend isn't going to be pretty.  Okay, but nothing spectacular.  Curious to see if it can top Godzilla '98 (after being adjusted for inflation is ~$550M WW.)

Reception has been largely positive. $93 million domestic gross in its opening weekend, much more than the estimated $70m; $196m worldwide; second biggest opening weekend of 2014; 72% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The negative opinions are always the most vocal on internet boards.

I saw the new 'Zilla on Saturday with some buddies. It started off promising, but OP is right in that the star of the movie has hardly any on screen time. In fact we see the MUTO WAAAY more than the big guy himself. And GZ is never really introduced the way the MUTO is, he just kinda shows up little more than halfway through the film and you only see glimpses of him until the end.

Also, another big negative is the not-so-subtle anti-nuclear power and global warming messages that the movie tries a little too hard to push. Obviously nuclear power and the a-bomb have always been themes of the Godzilla franchise, but Hollywood really needs to ease up on the holier-than-thou political messages.

Yea, there is definitely a much more focused effort to showcase the MUTOs.  Which wouldn't be bad if this was a sequel and we had already established Godzilla.  All we really get of Godzilla is a old film (which I liked, just needed a little more to establish him) and basically "Oh, he's coming, too."  I think Gareth just loved the MUTO creatures he created so much, he wanted them to get as much screen time as possible.  Unfortunately, that took away from the monster who was supposed to be the real star.

Well, because it did so well Friday, they were expecting over $100M.  However, because of the dip on Saturday, they are only estimating ~93M.  Still great, but given the unexpected dip, it may mean a very front loaded movie.

Industry forecasts were for $70m. They over-performed domestically by $23m.

I just saw it with a friend who is diehard Godzilla fan. Has every movie on VHS/DVD that's ever been released in the US. He absolutely loved it and he said that Godzilla's action scenes were just as long as previous movies.

Different strokes I guess.

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

It will still definitely surpass 1998 Zilla movie(adjusted and unadjusted), no doubt about that. It might even outgross it next week, even if it drops because of X-men. X-men isn't that huge overseas but Godzilla is.

My only exposure to Godzilla prior to this was the 98 film with Broderick. I went in with the expecation that Ithe movie would be a CGI fest like the abhorrent transformers movies. I was so wrong.

I loved the movie. It had serious flaws, but Godzilla himself was awesome. There was no shaky cam, and everything just looked better than most CGI spectacles these days. The film teased you with bits of the big guy, but when he finally roars mightily, it carries a lot of weight. I felt chills.

I'm glad they choose to: A: not overuse Godzilla
B: make the action easy to follow, and awesome.

Overall, I was super super impressed. The Godzilla "lore" is on display in this movie. And its actually super interesting. Godzilla is not just some crazy monster, rather an apex predator. He's not a hero, but he's not some mindless evil.

This movie made me a Godzilla fan. I eagarly await the sequel.

Aaron Taylor-Johson was terrible - end of story. His character was unbearable for me to be honest. Apart from him, the acting was really very, very good though.

Still, you missed the absolutely most awful thing that constantly made me feel like throwing up. The immortal-ultimate-unbeatable-bad-ass-american-marines-who-save-the-world-as-usual. Like they are some kind of superhuman. It's just disgusting to me at this point. I turn a movie off when I see it, which I obviously couldn't do in a theatre (such a shame). This also goes to the navy and the absurd placement of ships, following Godzilla with just meters of space between it and massive ships. Everything about the navy was so ridiculous it made me annoyed. This has really devastated the fun I had with the movie. Though I have to admit that I loved the slow and long build-up (before the Ultramarines showed up), which is the part of every movie that I enjoy the most - it's when everything is still a mistery and everything is possibile. That's why I like Alien so much - it takes so long to even realize who the main character is ;) So this part was done very, very well. I also agree that the monster fights were too short and they switched to the human part for no real reason.

To me - an absolutely average movie, but surely an above average monster movie. Could have been great, but showed too little of Godzilla and too much ridiculous super-Americans, which I just can't stand.

Maybe calm down a bit on the America bashing?

It was a litte bit too American in a way that felt almost like propaganda. I don't have a problem with that, it's just a movie, but I can see why it might annoy or upset some people.

I agree, I think that it would be more interesting if there had been some kind of conspiracy or clear villain but no, the Japanese and the US governments were portrayed like super heroes always willing to protect the people, same with the military, the media and even Godzilla itself, that was a little cheesy.

The "government is secretly evil" thing is terribly overused, I'm glad they didn't resort to it here.

And there was a clear villain: the Mutos.

Good and slightly dissapointing? Lol, what a contradiction. Anything better than god awful is a positive surprise for a Godzilla movie.
