Forums - Sales Discussion - If the X1 does not pass the Wii U by the end of this year, will you be shocked?

The gap between XBox One and Wii U will be cut down to between 500k to 1 million. By April 1, 2015 the XBox One should pass the Wii U and pass 10 million life time sales at the same time. The Wii U can rally with Mario Kart 8 and other notable game releases to temporarily hold off the XBox One's sales momentum.

I think your both off base.

During the holidays, the sales gap can be reduced by 200,000 in one week!

That doesn't account for the fact that the XB1 will launch in 20+ more territories by years end.  That will create an evere greater sales velocity for the XB1.

WiiU will be at 7.5-8 million by years end, if it is lucky.  The XB1 will be at 9 million +.

Won't be close by years end...

I'm counting the hollydays. My first calculation was only to show that at the current level (lowest possible), the One would get to a close draw at the end of the year. Worst case scenario (basically an impossible one). With Hollydays and a better library, it will pass easily. Despite that, the 20+ territories won't do much of a difference. Most of the sales come from the bigger markets (US, germany, UK, France and Japan). The X1 is out in the bigger markets, except Japan but that doesn't matter for it (except by the few hundred thousand units at launch before it plummets to less than 5k there). The remaining markets are too small and won't help in more than 5% or so. A good bundle in US for Black Friday can do much more than an entire year for these remaining countries.

I agree with the gap you sugested, but because of US Hollydays and BF, not because of the remaining countries. These gaps shrink faster than it looks. It looks like it was yesterday when PS4 was at 1M from the gap and it just took one big games and Japanese launch to fly over the gap and put an extra 1M advantage. People forget that PS4 is beasting and One is doing great in US while Wii U is pretty low. It's a two consoles race right now, at least in the US.

I don't really expect XBOne to ever pass Wii U.

No, not if people keep choosing PS4 over XB1. And honestly, I feel its better for the VG industry to have *PS curb stomp MS this gen, and have them exit the home console market*. Why? Because then it forces Nintendo to pay attention/wake up and go after THAT market once again. And unlike the mid 90s, Nintendo & Sony are neck and neck in terms of $$$, Sony is no longer the super brand it once was ( would be much better competition this time around).

*or even Nintendo to exit and become a 3rd party dev, if necessary. I simply am not in favor of a 3 console market, I prefer 2)

Not really, considering 2 of Nintendo's biggest franchises will have released by year's end, while M$ doesn't really have any big exclusives on the cards beyond a potential Halo 2 remake. I sincerely doubt that'll sell consoles. Halo: CEA certainly didn't..

You seem to forget that the first Halo was never as big and popular as the second one since it orginally didn't feature a online mode.  Halo 2 became hugely popular due to its online mode even when Halo 3 got released there where still millions of people playing Halo 2 online.

I'd be happy if the Xbox One NEVER passes the Wii U!! It's so close that it could go either way, though. Just hoping that the U becomes a successful enough to garner third party support again. Xbox One is gonna have it regardless of how it performs.

Even if the Wii U managed to maintain a larger userbase, its not gonna have great 3rd party support.

Look at the original Wii, massive userbase and 3rd party support was... meh. A few gems but not a lot to get excited about.

Ok? That doesn't mean millions of people are going to run out and buy a $500 piece of hardware just to replay a game that, chances are, they already own. You forget, Halo 2 didn't do that much better than Halo 1, considering both sold well over 8 million copies. Yet, Halo CEA still had to claw it's way just to break 1 million sales. Remasters don't sell anywhere near as well as some people think, even for the most popular games.

You need to check the numbers again Halo 2 sold more then 2 million copies more then the first game and that is just on the orginial X-Box and doesn't include the PC version.  Also in term of overall popularity Halo 2 was miles ahead of the first one since it had a very popular online mode which the first one originally didn't have.

Are people joking or trolling?
... I can see X1 easily selling twice as much as wii U by the end of the year.

You shouldn't ask people that and then follow it up with a troll post of your own.

no not at all, I have faith in smash bros, mario kart 8, bayonetta 2, x, and hyrule warriors to keep wii u ahead

SSB and MK can do it. Bayonetta isn't even a medium seller, Hyrule Warriors is a spin-off and X is a mistery (despite that, I believe it will outsell both HW and Bayonetta).

I would not be surprised if Hyrule Warriors moved a ton of console in Japan, I don't see it moving many any where else, but I really do expect a boost in Japan.
