I disagree. I doubt these things will make much money. The PS4 is certainly doing very well for them though.
All the real money is in smartphones, and after the Xperia Z, Sony hasn't released any big popular phone. Even the Xperia Z's sales had fallen after Samsung and HTC released their own flagship smartphones.

So essentially you want Sony to die.

Yes, S.T.A.G.E., that is exactly what he said. ¬_¬

The conclusions you jump to at times. Even if MoH is well known to try and diminish anthing Sony compared to how he talks about the other players in the industry, this isn't remotely what he expressed here.

Its a joke dude. Sometimes sarcasm isn't even fun anymore. Sometimes you kind of have to laugh things off.

Whaaat? How did you get that from what I said?

To be honest, I'd much rather see Apple, Google, and Microsoft die before Sony. Those 3 have gotten too large.

Getting the Xperia Z today, I'm very happy that they announced the Xperia Z1S/compact, I hate the fact that the flagship smarthphones nowadays are at least 4,6" or in the crazy 6" like Xperia Z Ultra or Galaxy Note. My current Xperia S with its 4,3" is already borderline too big, will have to adapt to the Xperia Z, but it was just too good of a phone to skip.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

You are right. This has been a very good achievement by Hirai.

The Xperia Z was quite succesful for Sony and the waterproof gimick made the phone very succesful.

Waterproof has nothing to do with it..it is one of the best phones of the market.

No the waterproof thing was its main selling point. Before that Sony were still releasing high end phones that nobody was buying even though they were just as good as the top Samsung Galaxy and Iphones. The Xperia Z's waterproof and dust proof feature really made it stand out.

Yep Waterproof was a pretty major selling point along with the "Best of Sony in Smartphone" tagline which supposedly meant good camera, good visuals, good sound, good design.

Before the Z though, Sony's previous high end phones were never really taken seriously because they always released products well after the likes of Samsung and HTC released their flagship devices. And not only did they release them late they also released them with average to subpar hardware. This was at a time when everybody was interested in bigger numbers ie. more cores, more memory, more pixels, more resolution etc.

The Z was one of Sony's first devices that had really good hardware on all fronts.

I have to agree with MoH. One of the main features that the xperia has over other smartphones and likely one that has contributed hugely to its sales is its waterproof feature. As someone who works outdoors a lot of the time, that is one of the reasons i got a water resistant xperia (albeit not the most recent Z models).

Wait! I agreed with MoH about waterproof being one of the main selling points! But the phone would not have done as well as it did if it didnt compete in all the usual areas a smartphone is expected to do well in like Camera, screen, hardware etc.

Intel Core i7 3770K [3.5GHz]|MSI Big Bang Z77 Mpower|Corsair Vengeance DDR3-1866 2 x 4GB|MSI GeForce GTX 560 ti Twin Frozr 2|OCZ Vertex 4 128GB|Corsair HX750|Cooler Master CM 690II Advanced|

The problem with Sony is that they research into things nobody wants or invest in stuff thats unsuccessful. There new VR TV device prived at over $1000, come on now. Do stuff people will buy not stuff to fill your stock rooms.

Easily the biggest announcement from Sony this year, PlayStation Now holds the potential to revolutionize the way games are played and simultaneously unite Sony’s broad product portfolio into a formidable gaming platform. Underpinned by the Gaikai streaming service that Sony bought in 2012, PS Now allows streaming of games directly to TVs as well as tablets, smartphones, and all the PlayStation consoles

Wow, let's ignore that Onlive and Gaikai (as he mentions) were already doing game streaming before Sony thought that it would be a nice idea to buy one of those companies. Sony revolutionizing indeed.

Lol. You dont get it. Before ipad there were tablet pcs. But why apple is credited to revolutionizing it? Because they had the biggest impact.

Article makes it sound sony is coming with something unique and never seen before lol. And I'm still to see anything better put together as Onlive. That thing is gorgeous and had gameplay recording and playback (with dedicated pad buttons) at the time. Too bad the library sucks though.

Hardware is on a good level but it needs to improve its service.
e.g. phones need android updates much sooner than they are getting them. I think they are the slowest on the market for that.
their computers and phones need to come with less crap so users can maximise the power of the system, and battery life in the case of phones and laptops.
the SEN store needs to be much faster and responsive, and better integration is needed on smartphones to compete with the google play store.

finally, the playstation phone needs to be reinvented by someone with a brain. the old one was worse than the vita in terms of hardware, yet it cost more than a PS3.
im no expert but making something like a vita GSM compatible doesnt add hundreds to the manufacturing cost.

Claiming that Sony is getting it's swagger back is fine. Saying that it is turning to a leadership position as a leading edge tech company is a laugher. Sony hasn't been a tech leader at all in the last 25 years. It has always been synonymous with average consumer grade electronics.

RCA is also synonymous for average consumer grade electronics. They too have announced many new high end electronic devices. That is what electronic companies do.

The writer of the article is mistaking the extremely high level of Sony's name recognition and market capitalization, with leading edge tech company.

It is near the end of the end....
