Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Sessler: Nintendo needs to change controller for Wii U to succeed

I really wish I hadn't wasted my time on that dribble, but felt it only fair before a response.

Stick placement? Really? Gamers seem to have no qualms with the PS3 and Xbox360 despite the different stick placements. All that muscle memory though, how do players adapt...

I agree that not enough games that utilise the gamepad in novel ways have been released, but at the same time, not every game needs to do this. Games designed for traditional controllers are still relevant and should be developed. Sometimes a dedicated map or inventory is all you really need, with the option for off-TV play, to add value to a game that is being played on the Wii U. Not every developer needs to completely flip their franchise on it's head for the gamepad's sake.

It's really disappointing to see uh, high profile I guess, game journalists using such bias and lack of logic, when so many are unfortunately actually listening and paying attention to them.

I like the GamePad's and Pro-Controller's button placement. The only problem is the lack of analog triggers.

Imagine the GamePad with the right analog stick at the position of the A,B,X,Y buttons an vice versa. It would be uncomfortable as hell and you would probably get cramps using the right analog stick.
X360 layout wouldn't work well with such a big controller. It would have worked with the Pro-Controller, but changing the layout would be confusing.

There are third party Wii U controllers with X360 layout from Nyko, Big Ben etc.

muscle memory lol

fucking tool aint no gamer. A gamer adapts to positioning on sticks and buttons.

I agree, that guy seems kind of foolish. Maybe he only started gaming in the last few years and doesn't realize the large number of different controllers that we grew up with.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

What a bag full of shit.
Funny to see another smartass that doesnt understand anything about the videogame market trying to talk about what Nintendo must do with the wiiU. There's nothing wrong with the Gamepad, it works just fine. The console is cheap and it has great games now.

Nintendo just need two things: Better marketing campaign and more advertsiment.

I still maintain that the Gamepad was conceived as a tool to assist Miiverse...for Miiverse to function as it is, it needs the gamepad for ease of typing and especially for creating artwork which is a very heavy feature. None of these would be possible on a traditional controller layout. Nintendoland, Zombi U,W101 , Rayman and Game and Wario have great ideas to show off what the gamepad can add gameplay wise, and off tv to me is the single most useful concept in the history of gaming. I havent had to fight my wife for the TV for a year now..peaceful days.

I came to this conclusion when using miiverse myself. The problem is that Nintendo needs a far bigger miiverse integration to really show it off. Like an amazing Animal crossing and some other IP.

3D world is already starting to show a very nice integration with miiverse. The way you can see other mii on the levels itself is really nice.

For OP: Without the gamepad the Wii U would really be a GC. Forgotten, left to the side and with nothing setting it apart. NIntendo has to bring more software to sell the gamepad. They have bring their vision of it.

I disagree with the "go for the hardcore not the casual gamers" depending on what he means by it. Consoles before the Wii sort of did that and they did not do well. I know it's very hard to replicate the success of the Wii, but they don't need Wii levels of success. They should just make a cheap system, that's sold at a profit, geared towards kids and families while also trying to satisfy veteran Nintendo fans.

LOL did not do well? like the PS1 and 2 both selling better than Wii?

PS1 and PS2 did not go exclusively for the hardcore crowd, they both had casual appeal.

I agree that nintendo should abort the gamepad, but I don't get the button placement thing. After years (and years ) of console gaming I gotta say I usually mentally associate button placements with individual games. Maybe I'm just not an idiot.

how so? I could see how PS2 might have with the whole cheap DVD but that only lasted a little while. How did PS1 aim at casuals? the library was anything but

PS1 had plenty of games like Tony Hawk, Tekken, and Crash Bandicoot that casuals could easily pick and play at parties with a bunch of mates and some beers. I know, I was there. ;)
