I know it's very hard to replicate the success of the Wii, but they don't need Wii levels of success. PS1 and PS2 did not go exclusively for the hardcore crowd, they both had casual appeal.

how so? I could see how PS2 might have with the whole cheap DVD but that only lasted a little while. How did PS1 aim at casuals? the library was anything but

PS1 had plenty of games like Tony Hawk, Tekken, and Crash Bandicoot that casuals could easily pick and play at parties with a bunch of mates and some beers. I know, I was there. ;)
