Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Star Fox could become a big gun for Nintendo if done correctly

Give it to Platinum. Seriously, I know this series can be good. I have been waiting for them to make a decent starfox for years. It seems so easy, but they screw up starfox every damn time.

Not sure if this suggestion is blasphemy, but I feel that Nintendo would also need to get rid of the animals as well and more towards more traditional sci fi characters. Whether they turn them into humans or aliens that resemble the creatures they are named from, I do think that the animal aspect would limit the seriousness of the game.

Eh. I like the idea of Star Fox being a furry parody of the typical space opera. One filled with cheesy and memorable one-liners, and featuring a comically overdramatic story.

Oh trust I like it as well.  No one likes cheesy parodies more than I do.  And even at suggesting moving from it, it pains me, but I think Star Fox is a series that could benefit from a well-developed story and characters to boot with that.  And I am just not sure they could keep doing that with the characters depicted as such.

Wii had to much 3rd party support so Nintendo wasn't worried about getting games with a plane shooting (Star Fox), jetskie (Wave Race), snow boarding(1080Snowboarding), futuristic racing (F Zero), basketball(Courtside for N64). N64 and Gamecube didn't have the 3rd party support so Nintendo basically did everything themselves, since the Wii had 3rd party support to actually make games to take the spot of the games i listed above. If we don't see strong support by 3rd Parties in 2014, you would see IP's like Starfox, WaveRace, FZero, 1080 and even stuff like Courtside return.

I don't know about "blasphemy", but it's certainly not a sound suggestion. That would be about as pointless as making Mario "less cartoony" to somehow "make it appeal more to core (meaning guys who like boobs and blood and shooting stuff) gamers". Or for that matter, making Master Chief a furry cartoon animal character. The Star Fox universe is populated by anthropomorphic animal characters. That's what they are. Changing them would not only be a betrayal of the series, it would also bomb harder than the "serious, realisitc" Bomberman abortion that Hudson Soft tried on Xbox years ago.

People like Star Fox for what it is. If they made a game JUST like SF64 (with all new levels and more content of course), with gorgeous HD graphics and swarms of enemies and things happening on screen? People would swoon. It would be a massively big deal, and the hype for it would likely equal some pretty solid sales.

Like ?

Metroid Prime.

You got me there but can you prove that it's not an exception ?

Depends. I didn't expect Next-Level Games to do a good job with Punch-Out!!, but apparently they were behind the two Mario Strikers games (which I disliked, but were successful... probably because Mario and soccer are two popular things). And they did a great job with the new Luigi's Mansion, so I guess Retro isn't the only notable Nintendo dev in the West anymore.

F-Zero GX from Sega AV surprised me too, for similar reasons. I didn't like Super Monkey Ball, but then again, there were some notable Sega vets on that dev team. The same could be said for Platinum and its Capcom vets, I suppose.

Mother 3 was Brownie Brown's second game, after the solid (but not popular) Magical Vacation.

I don't think Monster Games had a hit release before Excite Truck. Come to think of it, Excitebike 64 was given to Left Field and it turned out very well.

If by "done correctly", you mean "give it to Platinum", then I think it's possible.

If they gave it to platinum it would be awesome, but sell like 200k lifetime, lulz... XD

Well that is a false analogy.  No one would suggest changing Mario to appeal to the "masses" because it already does appeal to the masses.  Change, at least drastic change, is not necessary for Mario considering it still has mass market appeal and doesn't seem to be losing it.  Star Fox is not analogous to Mario because Star Fox is not appealing to the masses in droves.  Now a potential argument could be that the sales are on decline because Nintendo did move away from its core gameplay in both Gamecube editions.  But I think an appropriate counter to that would be questioning the selling power of the on-rails shooter genre, which over the last 10 years, has not been a very powerful genre.  Thus, I would argue, putting large amount of resources into a faltering franchise and then suggesting it continue to take on a genre that hasn't had mass appeal in over a decade would be a "less than sound suggestion".  Instead, if that was the reasonable option, then Ninty shouldn't bother making another Star Fox game ever, bar a downloadable only game.

But as I said I am just making potential suggestions.  Personally, given everything about Star Fox, they are probably best just leaving the series alone and maybe doing a downloadable game that brings nostaligia to fans every now and then.  Although I suggest drastically changing it, I am not sure if they could execute it well enough or be willing to go far enough to pull it off.  Then we really would get something like Bomberman Act Zero haha.

Star Fox can be Nintendo's better answer to Jak and Daxter.

Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. Either that or ham-fistedly trying to make it more deep and serious within established canon, like Other M. :/

I don't see anything horribly wrong with a play-it-safe downloadable title, If only to relearn how to make a Star Fox game and reacclimate mondern Nintendo audiences.

Star Fox sales haven't met expectations because they haven't put out a worthwhile game bearing that title since Star Fox 64. Star Fox on SNES and Star Fox 64 are both great games, and were successful for Nintendo.

If they want to do Star Fox RIGHT, they will do Star Fox the only way it SHOULD be done, which is like those games. Star Fox is an on-rails arcade style shooter. That's what it's supposed to be, and that's what it should be. Anything else is about as pointless as making an R-Type game where you get out of the ship and run around as the pilot.

They could do an AMAZING SF game on Wii U, if they really wanted to. But they need to get off their asses and do games like that, F-Zero, and Wave Race for Wii U in-house. And personally, I really want to see all three on Wii U eventually.

The only people who would buy this are star fox fans wanting a nostalgia fix.

The franchise needs to evolve to the 21st century to even temp 2million people to buy it let alone expand the franchise.
