Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Super Mario 3d World only 1.7 GB

This is what it has come to? Yay, the game is only x Gb? Glad you're enjoying your console ;p

Yes, because the quality of a game is measured in gigs, right? Super Mario Bros. 3 didn't even take up a 4 meg NES cart and it is one of the greatest (if not arguably the greatest) games ever made. Super Mario World, similarly, I do not believe was on any bigger than a 4 meg SNES cart itself, and yet it too was better than most other games than came out during the 16 bit era. It's not how much data you take up with a game, it's what you do with the data IN the game.

...Or to accomodate more and better detailed textures, models, cutscenes and an all-round more modern game.

Maybe Nintendo should have listened to these "not-Nintendo people" during the N64 era.

Final Fantasy 7 could have fit on a larger sized N64 cartridge no problem. Most of it's discs on PSX were taken up by FMV. Same can be said for games like Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, etc. FMV was the main reason why certain Playstation games could not fit onto cartridges.

not true... the prerendered backgrounds still take up a lot of space. Ofcourse, you could downgrade the textures to oblivion which some games did.
You can design around that limitation which is what N64 games did. But that would have changed the design of of those games quite a bit.

The game is 1326 mb with 849 mb in cutscenes. The largest N64 cart is 64 mb.

I'm pretty sure Mario's vocabulary saves a lot of space otherwise used for voice acting

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

edit: mb not gb...

capcom fit RE2 on the N64, cgi and all.

Nintendo is always slapping those that say blu ray size discs are needed in the face with their schlongs.

well nintendo uses a blu-ray equivalent, so I'm suprised this is so small. An ochestrated soundtrack should alone should take up 1.7 GB at least, not sure this a good thing.

Size definitely matters, people are going to tell you it's fine, it's the motion of the ocean or the way that you use it but it's all lies. The truth is that size is very important to satisfy the needs of the consumer.

Because a consumer's needs apparently include wasted space...

There's never enough space, the bigger the better. As rol above me said, you need a lot of space to achieve market penetration.

You missed the joke, read Rol's post again. ;)

If you can't make a great game in 1.7GB, you're not a good developer.
