Attack On Titan/Shingeki no Kyojin is a must-watch IMO.

Somebody recommended two anime's this year that I just loved.  One being Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood and the other is AnoHana.  I also watched Persona 4's (God damnit atlus announce P5 -_-) anime which wasn't as good as the game but still enjoyed :D

Anyways if you all can think of any other anime with deep stories then i'd def be up for watching some.

Death note > Gundam 00/code geass > Basilisk. Basilisk especially if you like gore, nudity and plenty of action, its basically a mature version of Naruto without all the cheesy cliche shit.

If you want what's popular on mainstream channel right now go for attack on titan. Skip that naruto, bleach, fairy tail etc all that crap. I personally don't like those long series or anything that has to do with moe. I don't watch much anime personally, except when a good series surfaces everynow and then. :)

Steins;Gate, absolutely.
Code Geass is quite old but is a must too.

My personal favorite's not in order

Stein's;Gate
Ghost in the Shell
Haibane Renmei <--has music done by the person who did SoTC soundtrack kow otani
Monster
Planetes

I love Serial Experiments Lain, and Texhnolyze. But, I really wouldn't recommend them to someone coming off watching Persona 4 and FMA:B. Those two are very inaccessible, and might just frustrate someone getting into this stuff.

Don't watch the original FMA, I know some people who thought less of the Brotherhood, by being tainted viewing the original series (which is still pretty good).

Pretty much what this guy said. And also a lot of people suggested Trigun which I agree with. Many more but these to start is good :).

I suggest Angel Beats, Clannad, Air, and Phantom Requiem for the Phantom. I would describe each in detail but I'll do that if you request.

Nothing was more disturbing and interesting at the same time than SE:Lain. Really. Do it. But don't cut your wrists after watching. And don't watch it when you are down.
