15 years ago, the very first Spyro the Dragon game released in North America.  Developed by Insomniac Games, publisher by Universal Interactive & distributed by Sony, the collectathon-platformer would go on to become a huge success, selling over 10 million copies between the first three releases.

After Insomniac's departure from the series, Spyro was handed from developer to developer.  Two games (Enter the Dragonfly & A Hero's Tail) continued the original storyline; while a new trilogy (The Legend of Spyro) focused on new gameplay mechanics and a whole new story.

The IP is currently in the hands of Activision-Blizzard who most recently used Spyro as part of the original "Skylanders" games.

So, here's to you little dragon.  You were a massive part of my childhood; you influenced my future gaming tastes for life; you gave me so many happy memories and I still regularly replay your games to this day.

As for Spyro. I won't lie, I was heavily in the Crash platformers camp back in the day but still credit is where credit's due, they were great games.

Shame a bit that both the aforementioned franchises, well let's say ended up in a worse position than they could and deserve to.

Oh right, Spyro isn't actually dead just yet. Sad to see what he has become, I really liked the first two games (and probably would have liked the third one too had I owned it).

My favourite part of my favourite Spyro level. If you make it to the end of the video, check the dragon inside the egg. Does the name of the dragon sound familiar? Does he look like anyone we've been seeing a lot of lately? :P

I loved Spyro. I only played Spyro 1 on the demo disc back then. The first Spyro Game I really played was the third one. Year of the Dragon. Damn, that music!

One of my favorite series, until of course Activision ran it into the ground. Now that Insomniac is multi-platform maybe they can work with Activision to create a new Spyro game?
