Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Smash Bros on 3DS and Wii U was a terrible idea

Tagged games:

The Wii U desperately needs system selling games, and Smash Bros would have been a Godsend... if they hadn't given players the option to play it on the much more common and cheaper 3DS.

They may have undermined one of their biggest potential hardware movers with this.

They are not the same game, so I don't really see the problem. It's not guaranteed they'll release at the same time either. Oh well, I'll buy both anyways...

The 3DS version will most likely not be able to hold a candle to the WiiU version.

And yes, the 3DS smash will probably be really fun, playing smash on the bus or at school sounds like a great idea, this is why I may also buy the 3DS version. But the WiiU have the advantage of being a game on your big TV that friends can come over and sit on your couch to play it together.

You should'nt underestimate the appeal of a game on stronger hardware and the ''lets all sit on the couch get drunk at my place while playing smash'' factor.

I think it's going to go 2 ways.

1.Smash WiiU is pretty much Smash on consoles. Better graphics, more multiplayer etc and such. Possibly some DLC alternate skins in the vein of League and such.

2.3DS version is where it gets tricky. Sakurai has said that it's more of a personal feel so here's what I think. There's mainly a campaign mode, maybe some event quests. The kick is that you can "earn" the DLC and the trinkets in the WiiU version with the 3DS version, if you don't want to pay for them in the WiiU version. Then you link them up and you can bring your hard earned treats to use online or with friends and stuff that like.

I think the main fun in SSB is to play it locally with your friends. I dont see the 3DS version as a competitor in that way. I think most people will go for the console version.

I'm quite certain Nintendo know this, and will take steps to ensure there will be plenty of incentive to buy the WiiU version.

Besides, Smash Bros. is a pretty core franchise, with millions of fans, most of whom I'm sure would rather play the game on a big screen with a proper controller, anyway.

If Nintendo starts doing this shit I will never buy from them. Although the Wii U is the first Nintendo console I've been alive for that I haven't bought at launch, I did plan to pick it up after SSB/MK/Mario came out. If they're gonna charge me £50 PLUS DLC then no. Really no.

Actually I think that it will help the WiiU version if there is a 3DS version. Nintendo will probably link both versions heavily so that completionists and younger people want to have both (somehow like Pokemon, but each version having console specific aspects).

AMEN

Smash Bros is popular due to local multiplayer. Local multiplayer on handleds is not very viable. That's why Mario Kart on DS hasn't damaged Mario Kart on Wii. Same goes for Smash Bros.
