If you only consider games like Cooking Mama, Wii Fit, and Nintendogs as casual, then the Nintendo Wii was never a casual game system. Some of the best selling games for the Wii were Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Land, Super Smash Bros, and Super Mario Galaxy. Outside of the heavily bundled Wii Sports, and Wii Fit, Wii doesn't have many mega franchise casual games then. X-Box is as much a casual system then because of Kinect Adventures.

As for everything else, casuals care about HD just as much as anyone else. No one wants to play 480p when everything is available in 1080p now. Saying casual gamers don't care about HD is like saying Smartphone buyers don't care about fingerprint unlock on the iPhone, or handwriting-text on the Android (where you never have to lift your finger).

For you every games that sold a lot without bundle is a casual game.

What's your point? You made a contradiction labeling most of Wii's games as non-casual games, but then claim the system needed the GamePad otherwise it wouldn't appeal to casual gamers. Why would it need to appeal to casual gamers if stuff like Mario Kart and Smash Bros are mostly for the hardcore gamers?

Nobody wanted that Gamepad. Nintendo didn't do enough market research. They unveiled it, and it was met with negative press, but unlike MS they decided to release it as is. No wonder the WiiU flopped, I bet you it would have sold a lot better with just a larger hard drive and no GamePad. Maybe a Wii Fit Board +

I think you misunderstood my comment. 2.5 million sales for week 1 is great, but for GT5 it was only 25% of lifetime sales.

Generally full out casual games have crazy legs, and we see maybe 3-15% of their lifetime sales given in week 1 (e.g. Mario Kart, Smash Bros, and SM Galaxy each opened to about 1 million sales (in all regions), but sold 33, 12, and 11 million lifetime).

Meanwhile a more hardcore game like......upon further research my arguement is invalid because games like XenoBlade and Vanquish also only get 20-35% of their lifetime sales during week 1.

-----

Well I still consider Gran Turismo to have a large casual appeal. It's not a dedicated casual game like Wii Fit, but I do see it as something like Super Smash Bros, a game which both casual and hardcore can enjoy. Same with CoD and GTA, they have hyper success because they manage to sell to people who never play a game with a single player component (Even for GTA, most people just mess around).

P.S. GTAV sold 8 million per platform week 1.

You did say GT games had weak first weeks, did you not? I'll repeat: "The length of the legs does not change the quality of the first week. "

Otherwise you could say GTAV had a weak or decent week 1 because it will end up selling 40m+ while its first week was only 16m (it sold over 9m on PS3 FW and over 7m on 360 FW)

Legs depend on a lot more factors than whether a game is casual or not.

But yeah, I agree with you that GT is popular among casuals.

I said GT games had weak first week sales, but I was comparing them to other big franchises like CoD and GTA. My point was GT games have legs, and one big reason is because they have a huge casual appeal.

If Gundam picks up the pace in the last 5 days it will end with a great number.

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

In other news, Gundam and Dragon Quest continue to go toe-to-toe in the daily. It's been quite interesting to watch those two.

Yokai Watch O.o

Can we see the game become a million seller now :P

hey you never know (500k realistically)

Also, I know this is only barely related to this thread, but since it's the only place on VGC we have ongoing Japanese sales discussion:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=98533118&postcount=495

Since I brought up DQM, for information sake:

Just checked DQ8 on Android: only now is in the 50,000 - 100,000 ballpark. Given how it was progressing, looking at AppAnnie graphs weeks ago, it's safe to say it's just over 50,000 units, and that it'll last in that period for a looong time.

Given the iOS DQVIII graph, and how usually the iOS / Android has been...175,000 - 200,000 units total (iOS + Android) could be a good estimate.

I think Square-Enix really missed a trick by releasing this on smartphones given these sales.  Should've ported it to any of the viable consoles in Japan (PS3/PSV/3DS/WiiU) and it would've sold more than this.  And at a slightly higher price point, too.

They could always have ported it to smartphones later on after sales had died down.

Contrasts sharply with their Dragon Quest Monsters game on iOS which is apparently bringing in line $1m/day (as a F2P game);

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=98534051&postcount=496

Nicolas Godement is the general manager of gumi Europe. gumi makes Brave Frontier and has spent a lot of time at the top of the Japanese iOS Top Grossing charts, including positions like #2 and #3.

He estimates that Dragon Quest Monsters: Super Light is bringing in around $1 million a day currently being in the top ~2-4 range.

I understand why SE are going so hard on mobile, but they should really be more selective about where they place their games.  Hopefully FFX HD and DQ VII 3DS showed them that it shouldn't just be 90% mobile and the scraps to consoles.
