Forums - General Discussion - I can't control my thoughts anymore.

I'm taking a psychology class right now. These are some basic things my teacher has told us will help with stress, depression, and what not.

-Get a good nights sleep. Don't stay up really late. Don't drink alcohol or smoke weed before you go to sleep. Some say it helps them sleep, but it really doesn't.

-Eat healthy. Goes without saying much.

-Exercise. Get a gym membership, if you already have one go a little more frequent. When ever I feel stressed or angry, working out always helps.

-Find something to occupy your time. Yes, video games qualify, but other things as well would be great.

-Be social. Go out with some friends to the bars. Go bowling, ride bikes, anything that gets you to be with other people. You must remember, human beings are social creatures.

Hopefully this helps a little. A lot of this should go without saying, but sometimes we need reminders. There also nothing wrong with talking to someone about these issues. Millions of people go through the same things. Your not alone.

First of all, sorry if my english is bad. Second, you need a diagnosis which can be done by a psychiatrist or a psychologist. They are not the same: a psychiatrist is basically a medic which deals with mental disorders while a psychologist is not a medic but an expert in the study of the mind, however both are qualified to perform a diagnosis. Usually a psychiatrist will give you meds and a psychologist will give you therapy: both or just one of the two may be needed depended on the diagnosis.

If you want some help right now I suggest you to look for help in forums about social anxiety because people in this forum are experts in videogames and may have not experience in this kind of stuff.

Finally I suggest you to read carefully this two articles in the wikipedia, which can help you to get more information, the first one is about OCD and the second one about tourette, Based on the info you provide I think you may have one of those or the two (I was diagnosed the two on my childhood):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsessive%E2%80%93compulsive_disorder
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tourette_syndrome

As a personal advice, don't pay attention to people who belittles your actual condition, says it's normal or propose illegal drugs or alternative medicine. Look for profesional advice!. I know this kind of stuff can cause a lot of suffering from my personal experience.

Greetings

i disagree. i believe we must take responsibillity and do our own research. Theres no such thing as a professional in psychiatry. They are just ppl with masters degrees. Experimenters is a more appropriate term to describe them.. maybe practitioners. The leading cause of suicide in america is psychiatric drugs. Its also the leading cause of mass shootings. Those practitioners do more harm in the world than good. Do your own research, google for what to do. use yahoo answers, but for god sakes dont let someone who doesnt know you fuck with your chemical balance. i just dont want to see anyone end like my brother. its your life, no one can devote themselves to it like you can. a practitioner just wants money. ps. i really liked the original post tony.. i can tell you have something going up there.. do the research.

Stress and anxiety. Try to eat healthier, get more exercise, and do some belly breathing to meditate for 15 minutes twice a day. Sounds simple and obvious those three are the best for anyone suffering from anxiety. Also, no sugar. Sugar will increase the amount of cortisol your body releases and make you feel worse. Sure you can see a dr, they may prescribe meds, but I'd try a life style change before you jump into medications if that doesn't work than give the meds a try, but keep up with the diet, exercise, and meditation as well.

I was walking down along the street and I heard this voice saying, "Good evening, Mr. Dowd." Well, I turned around and here was this big six-foot rabbit leaning up against a lamp-post. Well, I thought nothing of that because when you've lived in a town as long as I've lived in this one, you get used to the fact that everybody knows your name.

Now a professional might be the best person for this kind of thing, but if you know a friend who is willing to listen and spend time with you to advert your thoughts away from all the stimuli and get you concentrating on social interaction that might help.

Medication can mess you up really bad too, even though sometimes people need it, sometimes it is the problem. Taking more than you should could cause the problems to become worse, even if a little helps alleviate them. It's weird like that and their effects can last days after taking them.

I know the feeling you described. I've been depressed before and taken some Zoloft. I've also experience anxiety attacks during hangovers and utter loss of purpose and self. At a young age I spent a day obsessing about symmetrical touching, having to touch or scratch one part of my body and matching it on the other side. Drive me up a wall that whole day until I buckled up and logically attacked the idea of being able to achieve symmetry.

The mind is an odd thing, but one can overcome it. It is also important to eat healthy. Fresh fruits and vegetables, limit animal protein consumption, try to eat closer to 50% raw food intact, and don't get most of your calories from grains. Keep it diverse as well. It can take months for a healthy diet to start effecting you.

Before the PS3 everyone was nice to me :(

Yoga

If that fails, Hot Yoga.

You need to focus on breating and stuff there, and I dunno, I always forget my problems after a good yoga class. I liked Hot Yoga more just because I feel cleaner after a good sweat.

Yea, but other then that, see a doctor, or Meditate like Mugen said.

Hey man, I feel for you and can tell you from what you said in your original post, I can relate. I've been through some of things you've mentioned. I have anxiety too, my mother also has had anxiety and still does, she's been on medication on it for many many years, I remember my first anxiety attack was brutal, my mother was the person who I went to and she calmed me down after the attack faded. I thought I was dying, I couldn't breathe, I kept telling myself that I had to breathe. It's horrible and I truly understand. Everybody has anxiety, every person on the planet will experience anxiety some time in their lives, it's nothing uncommon and DO NOT think you're the only one. I know you feel alone, but you're not, you are here for a reason - i believe every human being is here for a reason. You just need to grasp yourself, life wouldn't throw anything at you that you can't handle. My advice to you is to talk to someone, anybody, a friend... family, doctor, perhaps you need different medication to help you, but you will get through this.

You need to find something to keep your mind off well... your MIND. Anxiety is created in your own head, it's created by YOU. I'm not a professional or anything, I'm just passing some common knowledge about this very common disorder. (Though I'm sure you've down your own share of research). But you just need to relax your mind, breathe deeply and practice something called Diaphragmatic Breathing, it helps a LOT with anxiety. It's breathing through your stomach rather than your chest, which could be causing you to have something very similar to what you're describing (something called Shallow breathing). Check out this link. It should help you how to learn, it's a step by step process. Very easy and effective for anxiety.

Anyways, hope you have yourself a great day/evening/night, and keep your head up man, things will get better.

smoke weed then jack off

My gf the therapist says: it's not depression (your depression comes from physical symptoms like anxiousness and frustration not from chemical imbalance) so they are prescribing the wrong drug. You have sensory misfire, you need to see a neurologist so they can do a cat scan. It's like you could have a tumor in your brain that can be fixed.

I get everything you said in the OP. I was experiencing VERY similar (though perhaps less extreme) symptoms to those you describe: I had to stretch my neck, tense different muscles in my body etc. etc.

Coming from someone that smokes a lot of pot, I would definitely say that it's not going to solve your problem. What will help is doing some intense physical exercise 3 or so times a week. Running, swimming...sweating and actually USING those friggin' muscles of yours will help - I guarantee it.

BS. Absolute BS.

It is 100% mental. If you forget to think about your 'itching' eyes, neck etc. then you don't need to stretch, tense them. It's a feeling that cannot be explained properly I think, but it's definitely not involuntary (which sensory misfire is).
