A 125% increase over dreadful sales is still poor sales. If WiiU couldn't get ahead of PS360 with MH and a price cut of this magnitude I think there's little hope...

Well, this was Monster Hunter, not Mario Kart. Price was never the problem, it's software all the way. I'd say the pre-Wii U dreams of Nintendomination and third party parity and stealing Japan foreverz have been pretty thoroughly smashed on the rocks of reality, but it's not exactly hopeless. Things will look up when Nintendo releases some of their games that people actually care about.

Dear princesss *bows* I must disagree : MH was the best chance to get non-nintendo fans on board (I myself kinda want the game), it is very attractive for RPG fans at large. On the other hand, MK should impact less since the Nintendo loyals already have the system. They may lure some casuals with it but the price is still a barrier though...

It looks like HMV slashed £140 off of the price of the console so it would be insane for it not to improve that much given the massive price-cut!!

It "slashed" about £50 off actually.

Hardware prices in the UK aren't as fixed as the US, you will never pay RRP in the UK unless you're a sucker and just buy at the first shop that has one, which would be any electrical store.

I got my Wii-U Premium for £200 about a month ago and not from HMV.

Zaavi was doing the Premium for £225 for a few weeks.

It's ALWAYS available at £250 (Premium), 8GB is available for £189 in a similar fashion, that is the real accepted price if you can't wait for a deal to get it for less.

The HMV sale is a one off because HMV are in the shit and will try anything to spark some interest in it's stores. Admittedly it did come with Zombie-U as well for £200 which is a massive price cut, but Zombie-U can be purchased for £23 so it's not quite the £140 you mention.

Nintendo hasn't set a fixed price for the whole of Europe for the WiiU. So the UK is not the exception this time.
Doesn't make anything you say wrong though :)

Lego City Undercover did not release that week in Europe.

We were spot on with the WiiU increase though. Good work.

This thread is amazing in all kinds of terrible ways.

It was probably the biggest third party title we'll see this year, I can agree with that much. And if it wasn't then Lego City Stories was, and that didn't help much either. But I don't think Mario Kart will have less impact by any means. Monster Hunter just isn't that big except in Japan. If you want to play a particular Nintendo series you will probably wait until the game actually comes out rather than buying the console this far in advance.

But it all depends on what type of sales we're talking about here. I think the Wii U is going to be a Gamecube, not a Dreamcast and certainly not a Wii.

Maybe. The issue is "games people actually care about". Considering it looks like there's a graphics war on at the moment for who has the best looking engine, while the nextbox has yet to be announced, any news/releases from Nintendo may be overshadowed by other news & titles e.g. BF4, nextbox news, more PS4 news, more tech demos, star wars 1313, GTA5 etc. Their work is really cut out for them. They're going to need a monumental advertising scheme.

Oh no, I just realized, I made another non-doom Wii U thread with the Most Wanted Digital Foundry thread! 0_0

Two non-doom Wii U threads at the same time? Oh noez, the sky will fall! Oh no, wait, this one had been turned into a doom thread, the world is saved...

It was still a very large saving, the HMV deal got over 1000 degrees on HotUKDeals IIRC. Nintendo should take notes on this price point though, when its priced similarly to the PS3 and 360, the WiiU will sell decent numbers.

I agree (also an avid HUKD visitor :) that site has cost me thousands lol!)

I'm sure a proprotion can be attributed to HMV but I don't think it's quite as a contributing factor as some may think. There aren't that many HMV stores in the UK that aren't in very highly populated areas and generally speaking, which is reason it's gone down, very few shop there even in inner city which is where all the stores would be with a lot of stock. In Wales where I live there's Swansea and Cardiff and that's it, the Swnsea one is miniscule (heck it might have even shut down haven't been there for years). I know that generally HMV operates quite a few smaller stores where I can't imagine they'd have had that much stock.

There's also the view that HMV has actually shut down completely amongst quite a segment of the population.

Of course that's quite an anecdotal opinion but I'm sure you're aware as much as me since you know about HUKD and the like, it's not a popular shopping destination, and even HUKD although massively popular is certainly not a website that everyone knows about. Also have to ask the question of stock, did they really shift thousands at that price, hard to say.

Could be what made up the lions share of the increase, could not be...hard to say, just flipping the coin a bit to give another viewpoint :)

Yayyyy another Welsh boy! =D
