Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony advances the Supercomputer - rumor US govt to buy millions of ps4s

If true, yet another example why the US government is incompetent. Blowing all of our tax dollars on top-secret facilities where they set up game consoles to perform tasks. Jesus...

SOny has single-handedly advanced the notion of a "supercomputer" for years now. A turbo-charged supercomputer on steroids, the ps4 will mark the pinnacles of graphics and high-end computng horsepower. There's no doubt that the pS4 will makr the dramatic rise of Sony as they reclaim the supercomputer market for themselves. It's rumored that the US govt will be purchasing millions of ps4's to run their top-secret servers and do all their supercomputing and domestic spying. Hmm...yeah except that my PC has far higher specs than the PS4.  So... I'm advancing the notion of the supercomputer and leaving Sony in the dust?

PS4 = more power for less cost. Duh.

In comparison to what?  On it's face, PS4 is a mid-spec gaming PC.  Impressive for a game console, certainly, but by no means competing with high-end gaming PCs.

A PC with the same specs as the PS4 is more expensive than the PS4, thus PS4 = more power for less cost. It's really quite simple.

What a joke.. As a console compared to last Gen its a leap.. Compared to anything the govt has ( i mean high level ) its severely underpowered - Only govt agencies that would buy the PS4 would be the welfare dept

This is the exact same crap that was said about the PS2 then the PS3....The "real" super computers that are availabe today make the PS4 look like a Commodore 64.  In fact, My 1 1/2 old PC is specked higher than the PS4.

So your 1 1/2 year old pc has 8 gigs of DDR5 ram? Cool. I didn't think you could build a pc with DDR5 SYSTEM ram today, and you did it 1 1/2 years ago, cool. Actually, you can only buy MOBOs that use ddr, ddr2 or ddr3 Ram modules today! DDR5 is quad pumped so its transfer rates are twice as high as DDR3. The PS4 is using DDR5 for system ram, that's twice as fast as any motherboard system ram you can use today (DDR3).

Are  you actually saying that you think there isn't a PC made in the past 2 years with higher system specs than the PS4 will have based on a PC not using GDDR5 memory for it's system memory? just to be clear here, a PC not using Graphics Double Data Rate Memory? as it's system memory?? Did you also believe the Megadrive was faster because it used Blast Processing btw?

For the record I don't think it's the best use of taxpayer funds but when you consider that the JSF program has cost in the vicinity of $400 billion dollars and rising, then this wouldn't be so bad.

Dude, why would the US government use a game console to run their top secret servers? Sony just got hacked remember? That wouldn't look good on the US's part. There are computers that they use that are the fastest computers in the universe. Not China, nor Russia has a faster computer than the US. We're not going to use a PS4 for server security. Any game company can make a super computer game console, it has to be their will to make it. Any game company can call up IBM and ask for the most powerful thing in history but power comes at a cost.

PSN was hacked, this has nothing to do with the console's computing power. And also the hacking of PS3 has nothing to do with its computing power. BTW they won't even run Sony OS or games on them, but they'll mod and hack them to use an OS suitable for supercomputing applications. And the supercomputer most probably won't be directly reachable from internet.

About other people mentioning PS4 not offering the breakthrough PS3, with the Cell, did: it all depends on how much Sony, taking initial losses on HW, will allow to save on a given amount of computing power compared to buying it from traditional producers of supercomputers or nodes to build them.

Anyhow this is just a rumour, US govt will decide only when it will know how much extra computing power PS4 will initially offer at a loss, if any, or at least charging a profit margin lower than competing solutions.

What's a new PS event without the usual "would be used for supercomputer-like things" hype?

Remember the stuff being spread about PS2 being used to launch missiles by Saddam Hussein?

Yeah, it sounded stupid back then, now this rumour sound simply lame. The military has a lot of money to spend (so no need to take advantage of a loss-leading-strategy), but they have special requirements for quality, security and other stuff that is usually not met by consumer electronics. So this rumour is extremely unlikely.

Wouldn't this be bad for Sony? They're without a doubt going to be selling each console with a loss, the us government aren't going to be purchasing ps4 games for there computer. All this does is rip Sony off and put them further into debt! $100 loss on a million consoles is $100,000,000 loss. The Us are just taking advantage of them.

I don't care if it relies on computing power or not you can't deny that PS4 will not be used in US Govt if we have computers far more powerful  that that. I just brought that up as a fitting joke. I'll be darned if the US uses PS4s in everyday business. They already have super super computers! Why'd they need a game console? And I don't want to hear the "It's more than a game console" garbage because it's primarily a game console. They have a computer already made for their purposes. They're not going to switch to PS4, I'd bet a billion billion billion dollars on it:D
