Forums - Nintendo Discussion - Gamasutra: At 57K sold, Wii U's January performance is historically abysmal

It's like watching a train wreck... but you can't...look...away. Anyone could have predicted this btw. No third party support, poor exclusives at launch, subpar "next gen" hardware.

The funny thing is that strategically nintendo is fucked as well. Sony is mass hyping this PS4 reveal, microsoft will do the same with XBOX3. Meanwhile nintendo's only answer to the competitors hype is.... "mario and lugio party" or whatever it's called. Oh and mario DLC?

Really? That's ALL you have lol.... Writing on the Wall.

It's a vicious circle. This always happens at launch.

Nintendo fans doomed PS3, celebrated Wii success. PS fans quiet

Sony fans doomed 3DS, celebrated PS3 success. Nintendo fans quiet, await the PSV

Nintendo fans doomed Vita, celebrated 3DS success. Sony fans quiet, await the Wii U

Sony fans doomed Wii U, celebrated...Vita success (?). Nintendo fans quiet, await the PS4

Please... can you read the last sentence again because I didn't understand.

We (sony fans) celebrated ? success? lol lol lol

PS. I just kidding.

I was trying to think of something for Sony fans to be happy about sales-wise currently, but there isn't really a lot of hope for Vita currently and the PS3 is on the decline, so I thought I'd leave it up for people to make their own decision!

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

The WiiU is never going to succeed as long as it keeps competing with the PS3 and the 360...
On one side you have a platform with very little software and whatever software there is is only available at full price.

On the other side you have a huge software catalog and due to the longevity of the consoles, a huge part of the catalog is available at low/discounted price ( even new releases are heavilly discounted after a few months due to the age of the consoles).( there's plenty of games available for 20$ as digital download on the PSN that are as good in quality as most WiiU available titles..)

And the reality is that for the casual customer, the WiiU games look a lot like the PS3/360 games so in the customer's minds they do compete...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Very true. And the blame goes toward a week SW Forecast.

What if this is just a foreshadowing of how the next XBox and Playstation consoles will do?  What if people are just bored and better graphics won't do anything to fix things?

I listed four things they do not have as well as noted some where WiiU is clearly better.

All it needs is the software ... i.e. exclusive software or upgraded software for those with PS360s. It has the features and price point.

Don't you think fours is little? I undertand your list... there things better implemented in Wii U but there are things that are worst yet... overall all these features you can find in PS360 (paid or not)... and the PS360 have a lot of others exclusives features.

Wii U is giving nothing new... think like the PS4 and Nextbox will give you a Share video feature to record and upload while you play the game... that's a amazing feature that next-gen needs.

What Wii U gave to us that PS360 didn't give? So little.

How much demand would there actually be for video recording though?   The people that actually want to do it, will buy the software to.   I am sure that it wouldn't be hard, and could even be an optional software purchase.    However, being able to record those videos could take away from the quality of some games.   Unless they do like the Wii U, and split the memory.

Personally, I think in their own way, all 7th Generation consoles have brought some unique gameplay elements.    The Wii revolutionized motion based gaming, and was a blockbuster hit for simple minded moms or parents that had kids, that wanted simpler games.   The Xbox had Kinect, and the way that they handle party chat as well as the music player, both are brilliant.   The Playstation 3 gained the ground that they did for three reasons.   1)  Free online  2)   Playstation Plus  3)  Blu-Ray Player, by releasing the PS3 last, they were able to One-Up the Xbox.   Did they price themselves crazy?   For the backwards compatible systems, hell no.   For the slims and Super Slims?   $269/$299/$349 is a fair price point, for the massive library of games.

The problems that the Wii U and the Playstation Vita face, is the fact that you NEED games for it.   When the Nintendo 3DS came out, it was a serious turnoff because there were already 140 million DS's, most of which could play Game Boy Advance games, and the 3D effects were not cool, though innovative.

For the install base that the Vita has, Call of Duty Black Ops Declassified is very successful, despite numerous flaws, morons like myself paid full price for multiplayer on the go, the smart people bought it as a bundle for $199.

For the Vita to succeed, it cannot be charging $350 to not be a half ass machine.    $199 with at least an 8GB memory card would be a lot more reasonable and in line with the 3DS.   3 years down the line, IF Sony gets the support for the system as promised, it will destroy the 3DS, but with it owning less than 13% of the market share, it clearly shows games sell the console.    What if Killzone Liberation, Warrior's Lair and Soul Sacrifice Flop?   We still have Madden and FIFA!   Although it is nice that Xseed is starting to pump out games for the console.   In retrospect, DIGITAL games are being released every couple weeks for the Vita.   Rainbow Moon is also getting ported to the Vita, which is a great thing.

Earth Defense 2017 Portable may seem cheesy, but it's actually a lot of fun to play in short spurts, or with friends.

Pinball Arcade looks and plays beautifully on the handheld.

Super Stardust Delta is a very fun shooter, yes it's been out a while but it's still great to play.

To the guy who said the Wii U didn't even sell 1 million yet: Wrong
To the guy who said the Wii U will be Nintendo's worst selling console yet: It already surpassed the Virtual Boy. Don't get your hopes up.
To everyone else: I predict the Wii U will see a spike in sales and maintain its sales within 12 months.

Nintendo should've gone for ps4/720-ish specs with a year earlier launch. Right now, what incentive does anybody have to buy a Wii U? The exclusive are few, and the multiplats are pretty much identical to their ps3/360 counterparts, only the online communities are all on those other platforms.

Releasing a ps3/360 caliber console years late wasn't the right approach, controller and Nintendo games or not. Releasing a ps4/720 level console a year before the competition could've gotten them somewhere.

This isn't like the handheld market, where their "low spec" product (relative to their direct competitor) isn't competing with six year old devices that are similarly spec'ed.

I think most people saw this coming. Though I didn't expect it to be quite this bad. I was more thinking we'd see a N64-like success. Reasonably strong sales propped up by strong first party releases, but nothing comparable to its predecessor. It remains to be seen whether future first party releases will give the Wii U the renewed life it needs to stay afloat.
