Forums - Sales Discussion - PS3 to be the second most popular home console EVER?

Yes. Wii will stop selling around 100-102m. PS3 has 5 more years left of sales. The shipments should be around 75m right now, it will definetly do another 25m.

My prediction still stands, PS3 will reach 105m.

I doubt that they can go cheap enough on the PS3 because of the required hard drive for it to pass the PSOne even.

Most older systems hit $99 and that is VERY unlikely to ever happen with the PS3. The HD consoles this generation have held their MSRP MUCH longer than older systems.

5 more years? How?  It launched at the end of 2006.  Even going by Sony's own bloated "10-year lifecycle" tag, which is of course bogus, that's less than four years away from reaching fruition.  And you're not factoring in that PS4 by all estimates will launch no later than fall 2014, which means PS3 sales will nosedive.  In all likelihood they'll probably nosedive starting this holiday, as Xbox 3 and Wii U begin the new cycle and stomp out the previous generation.

Bogus? As far as I know Sony's consoles always sold more than 10 years. Even PSP will make it to 2014, what makes you think PS3 won't live to see 2016-2017? PS3 launched in 2006 and 2007 in Europe. The sales are falling ofcourse, the focus in the West and Japan will shift to PS4, while Sony will introduce and market the cheap PS3 to emerging markets. This is Sony's strategy and it happened with both PS1 and PS2.

wont pass Wii.

too bad you're basing that information out of thin air.. or your imaginery crystal ball(I SWEAR A MOD WARNS ME FOR THIS.. IT WOULD BE THE BIGGEST HYPOCRICY I HAVE SEEN ON THIS SITE.. CONSIDERING THE THINGS KOWENICKI GETS AWAY WAY ON THIS SITE)

PS3 is still not at it's lowest price yet.. and is still outselling the wii by hundreds of thousands of units a week..  Wii will end up being discontinued soon as well.. as it has barely any software support from anyone.. and is barely being stocked in the U.S

Yes. PS3 will sell between 110 and 120 million... my bet is near 115 million lifetime.

Thats basically 4-5 years worth of PS3 sales......not taking into account sales declines and next Xbox/PS4 taking the wind out of it.

I cant take your predictions seriously :P

So you're telling ppl, that after microsoft and sony announce a nexgen system.. ps3 sales are just going to drop like a rock.. you realize the ps3 has yet to receive it's big mass market price point..

$199 or less

once it reaches that price range world wide sales will sustain themselves.. or even sky rocket..

history has taught the industry.. that unlike XBOX and NINTENDO.. PLAYSTATION doesn't just go poof after a nexgen system is announced or launched.. the PS2 did end up outselling most of the systems that came a generation after it.. for years

Its mass market priced in Europe with that tiny gig PS3 right?

It wont drop like a rock....but itll slow. When They actually release itll slow even more. When Xbox and PS4 gain momentum, PS3 will slow a little more then too. Get it?

PS3 is different from PS2 and you know it.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

yea i can see it. end of 2013 definitely (i normally stick to fiscal yr. end/Q4 so maybe 88-95m in Q4 2014) 84m 4th wk of Dec. 2013.

i think PS3 can sale 12m by end of 2013. well right now i do. things change. then in 2014, 8-10m for the yr. making it 92-95m 2014. 100m 2015, 105m 2016.

Why is it unlikely? PS2 lived for over 12 years, and at the rate PS3 is going it could easily last for at least 4 more.

The sales rate for PS3 is far behind the PS2.  I think this console cycle has gone on so long that people forget how quickly sales drop when the successors hit.  If people are pinning their PS3-hitting-105-million hopes on emerging markets, I think they will be disappointed.  I don't think that 100 or 105 million is a realistic trajectory for PS3 in the next four-to-five years, and if I had to venture a guess I'd wager that Sony's own internal expectations don't show that trajectory, either.
