Forums - Nintendo Discussion - From A Skeptic: Where Nintendo Should Take The Wii U

@Mr.Khan: I think the problem with Other M was that it was just a bad game. If it weren't for the family friendly image, I think Sakamoto had put tentacles in it.

It's a chicken-and-egg question. Did it fail to gain mass appeal because it was a bad game, or was its attempts to have broader appeal (more story, simpler controls, more overtly linear gameplay) what made it a "bad" game? (I rather liked the game, tbh)

Metroid is close, however. A game like that would fit the bill; thematically fitting for older teens or young adults, distinctly Nintendo, but something with a gameplay style more in line with what the mainstream-core wants.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

lol, give it at least half a year god dammit xD
theres nothing wrong with the WiiU, console launches are usually very sloppy, its lacking games but by holiday 2013 it will be ready for the war

3) Miyamoto already admitted they will never create a hardcore character for older audiences. He said himself that he would never create a character or a game he cannot play while on the couch with his family.

4) Sony kind of destroyed Nintendos relationship with Konami and Square by offering them new tech to expand upon and their relationship got better as the years and Nintendo fell behind getting secondary games.

Nintendo have the exclusivity of Dragon Quest and other games mostly on the handheld department, that shows their relation is definitely good. Konami is another story though.

I would not either say that Konami's relationship is destroyed with Nintendo either. They really pumped out those Castlevania games for GBA and DS.  Home Consoles is another story.

I guess you are right, never liked the new Castlevania games so I guess I forget them lol.

Obviously WiiU can't compete with the ps4/xbox. They lost the casual crowd and 3rd party support is phasing out quickly. The WiiU is too late to the party

I make no mistake that I think the Wii U is headed for a lot of trouble, especially this year. I'm not sold on a lot of the Kool-Aid that Nintendo selling this time around.

So from this POV, where not all things are raindrops and lollipops in the world of Wii, what would I suggest Nintendo do? A few pointers that I think are more out of the box, but I think are ways for Nintendo to carve out their own niche.

1.) Idiot Proof Your Marketing - Your marketing ... sucks, Nintendo. OK. So what's the quick fix here? Hire a spokesperson, someone who can be the face of your product. I would reccomend either Megan Fox or Kate Upton. Regardless of what you think of them, they are well known, attractive, and can more easily position the Wii U as the "hip" and "Hollywood cool" console. Just show their day, in their trendy LA or New York apartment, watching Netflix on Wii U, then switching to play some NSMBU with a friend, then turning on the Youtube channel and laughing at a video -- there simple. A campaign like this will also get attention on things like Access Hollywood and Entertainment Weekly.

And indirectly this is smart marketing, but aligning the Wii U as the console of choice for an attractive model/actress, it's kind of a slap in the face of the stereotypes that games are for nerdy male teenagers/college guys or little kids. It's how Apple would market.

2.) Screw Third Parties -- There I said it. You will never win in a race with Sony and MS for the traditional third parties. So why keep competing in a race you can't win? Change the rules. Start investing more and more directly into small, low-risk indie developers, especially from the West, like the Trine developers. Go find the next Angry Birds or DOOM, it's out there some where with 6 guys in a garage. Go find them. Continue to develop more alliances with Japanese developers like Platinum Studios. Work with Mistwalker again (The Last Story wasn't bad, just released way too late in the Wii lifecycle). Pick up Itagaki's "Devil's Third".

3.) Create (or buy) a flagship "hardcore" character IP -- Mario paves the way for a lot of the mascot/cartoon/license based content that floods Nintendo consoles, but Nintendo really doesn't have a similar beacon for the older audience. You could always let Retro try their hand at a new IP, or go find one to publish. I suggested for risk-averse Nintendo to approach the folkes at Danjaq/EON productions, who own the James Bond license. Bond is cool, Bond is easy to market, if the rights are available, perhaps Nintendo could get them (or perhaps just rights to Bond FPS games). A Bond game with the same effort put into it as a Mario or Zelda would sell an easy 3-4 million and then other developers could look at that and say "oh, I guess there is an audience for something edgier here after all".

4.) Get In Bed With Square-Enix -- Screw Kingdom Hearts, a Nintendo-Square-Enix RPG has long been hypothesized ... but it would also make a lot of sense. And sell a ton of software and hardware potentially. Contact Square-Enix, I think they would be very interested, but it should come at a price. Final Fantasy VI and VII Remakes for 3DS and Wii U. The Wii U in Japan needs a killer-app from a third party, and no, sloppy second Monster Hunter ports and an MMO Dragon Quest don't cut it. A Final Fantasy x Nintendo x Dragon Quest game (gulp) would sell millions and millions. Some fanboy fantasies are silly and stupid, this one just makes sense.

5.) Consider A Controller Re-Design -- No big deal that handhelds get redesigned every year or two ... so why not the Wii U pad? The current version is too bulky and quite frankly a bit ugly with poor battery life and a so-so screen. In a year or two, maybe consider making a sleeker Wii U pad with a larger battery and a better quality screen. If this thing is supposed to be in everyone's living room and even their defacto TV remote ... it needs to be less of an eye sore.

These are some refreshingly smart well thought out ideas.  If these were brought out in a Nintendo Board Room meeting, they'd be taken seriously.

That means very little to people in the west. Hopefully Japan supports those games. Nintendo is secondary to western developers, Square Enix and Konami alike. Its not a bad thing for them to make games for the handhelds because they are made timely and its less costly. Less risk compared to a full game being that the profit margin is larger and the cost to develop is cheaper.

Back in the NES days... or even SNES Metroid was about as grown-up as you could get. The sci-fi, the bleakness the shooting, the creepy aliens. More adult themed titles are not totally foreign to Nintendo. Metroid is still somewhat like that, but unforunately the theme is a bit niche. It's like Aliens is for film... the name is odd and geeky, it's got a female heroine (who doesn't even look female which is double no-no) and the game is too methodical for most.

Nintendo could really use a game like Halo was when it launched. Cool, fresh, adult but not overly violent, long and deep but still action focused and mass-market friendly. Metroid could be that title but only with a major overhaul. The name would need to be changed (it could still be in the same universe, just not focused on the life-sucking aliens) Samus should lose the old outfit and get something more sleak and sexy (the bulky shoulderpads were only added because the gameboy couldn't show color anyway), the pace quickened slightly and maybe a second player co-op added with a cool new partner. A bad-ass alien or a male bounty-hunter with cool new abilities.

That said, I would prefer them just making a new IP. Like it was suggested, Retro is a great fit. They've recruited great talent from Naughty Dog and others. Make something fresh, action-packed and cinematic. It would complement the rest of the lineup so well. Metroid could continue being a niche thoughtful adventure game and this new series could make the WiiU fresh and cool. It would be great to have this and old favorites like Mario and Zelda. I have my fingers crossed that something like this is Retro's unannounced project, but I think the title will be something based on an existing IP.

I'm going to slaughter a sacred cow for Nintendo fans here -- but enough with the Metroid. It's not the franchise Nintendo wants it to be. Nintendo keeps trying to position it as their answer to things like Halo, and it's no where close. Even in the NES/SNES days it was never a big seller like Mario or Zelda.

It's a small potatoes franchise. The truth is when people come home from a tough day at work or school they just wanna be able to sit down and "shoot sh*t".

Metroid is far too cerebral and solitary of a franchise to fill that need.

A James Bond game from Nintendo or even a Perfect Dark game (provided Nintendo had been able to retain the rights to this license) of similar quality would outsell a Metroid game every, single, time. Metroid is a fantastic franchise, but it can't carry or drive hardware sales, it's never been that type of series and never will be.

Nintendo needs a franchise like this which sells 3-4 million copies every time out. Results matter, there are no merit badges in the game business.
