Level – 5 and game designer Yasumi Matsuno have come together to create Crimson Shroud, the table top RPG.

You play as Giauque, a young “Chaser” who makes a living finding people’s lost treasure. The outcome of every battle is decided by the amount of dice you have and the player’s ability to strategically string together skills and earn bonus dice effectively.

“When it comes to creating intricate, compelling and fun role-playing experiences, it’s hard to find anyone more respected than Yasumi Matsuno,” said Akihiro Hino, President and CEO of Level – 5, “Crimson Shroud serves to continue this amazing legacy of genre-defining games.”

Downloading at the moment, later I will play it. I'm hyped, as I play RPGs on a table with friends, if this game really orients towards the roots, it might be good.

My impression so far - yes, many design-decisions were made to create a video-game-RPG, that resembles well a Pen&Paper-RPG-session. That includes even rolling yourself the dices (I'm not sure if the outcome is really influenced, by how I shake the dices). This has an unexpected effect: like on the gametable I start to curse, if I see a lot of ones and twos.

The encounters are resembled by miniatures. The story is told by descriptions, that are very similar to what a gamemaster might tell.

The system itself is nothing I know (no D&D, Earthdawn, Shadowrun or so). But the system could well be played on a table, it is not hacked for usage in a video-game. Also it is a very dynamic system. You can get bonus die, that you can use on every action. As much as you want and for what part of the result as you want. So you can use in an attack a bonus-dice for more damage or a better hit-chance. Or for each one die. Or three.

Interesting, and I really like the attempt to bring the experience on the table to a video-game. So far I like it.

sounds interesting. i doubt if shaking the dice makes a difference either.

I've been looking forward to this game and hope to download it soon. The reviews haven't been very consistent, but from reading a bit of them it sounds like something I would enjoy.

A word of warning: if you expect some barely interactive movie like Final Fantasy - no it isn't one. If you expect an old-school RPG from the golden times of RPG like Wizardry - closer, but no Crimson Shroud isn't either. It really tries to get the experience from a table playing Pen&Paper. Naturally this doesn't work fully. But they come nearer than I have seen before. But they even copied things, that can be made better on a video-game-system. There are no animations for instance, there is a static scenery with miniatures in it. Even the main characters are miniatures. If you beat an enemy it's miniature falls over (there is a Level 5 logo on the bottom). If you play pen&paper-RPGs in real life, then you might give it a try.

And I like the battle-system. It has cool features. As you gain bonus-die for making actions for different elements you automatically try to diversify your attacks.

I went ahead and purchased this blindly yesterday after reading about it and hearing a few pieces from the soundtrack. I only checked it out briefly and I liked what I saw. To be static imagery, the models could've looked a little better, though the artwork is top-notch. I downloaded the 2-disc soundtrack too (Hitoshi Sakimoto) and the few pieces I heard were really nice. This is going to be a fun game. The battle system is fun.

I'll sink my teeth into it later once I get a little farther into Paper Mario.
