According to a user on CAG, the 3DS will be getting an official price drop to $139 in 2 weeks and a Blue 3DS XL w/ Mario Kart 7 for $199 is coming as well:
http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=332985
The 3DS XL Blue with Mario Kart 7 bundle will be on sale next week. Edit: The bundle will be $199.99

The regular 3ds will be getting an official price drop to $139.99 about 2 weeks from now.
---
Additionally, Target will have regular 3DS's on sale for $129 next week.
Can't believe there is going to be another price drop so soon if this ends up being true. Looks like Nintendo is starting to get aggressive to make the 3DS more popular over here. Now if only we can go back to $30-35 games...
Also Sony has to cut the Vita price like...now.
UPDATE: "After having more time to review the info I got with another person, I have decided to remove the part of my post suggesting this is a MSRP. The $139.99 is legit and will happen in 2 weeks from at least one retailer but the info I have is kind of confusing on if it is a MSRP drop or just a retailer discount."

Is this for the forever? Or just the holidays?
If forever and ever, it could be HUGE.
And I approve this, desperate times call for desperate measures.

Official price drop so...forever. The only holiday deal is the $129 Target deal.

Why would the vita need to respond when its not competing now? Maybe Iwata is coming to the realization that phones and tablets are effecting 3DS sales in NA.

Well...I assume the Vita wants to compete. This just makes it harder. It's Sony's move now.
But yeah this is definitely to counter phones/tablets.

Umm...the OG model is the one getting the rumored price cut. So...what do you think? :P

I could understand a sale price but an offical price cut?? Maybe Nintendo is still short of their projected numbers.
I haven't bought a game since Kid Icarus and it doesn't seem likely I will get another til Castlevania.

But a price cut is always good for consumers!

Maybe they want to get rid of the regular 3DS models in the west. Personally, I don't think price is the problem although inofficial vita prices are pretty damn close to the XL. Nintendo needs to get their shit together when it comes to western localisations. Fire Emblem taking a fricken year to come over just doesn't fly in this day and age when people know to the minute what happens in Japan.
Edit: Maybe they want to be more competitive against their own, the infamous DS, which is still pulling decent numbers despite having been poisoned, stabbed and shot by Nintendo.
Ongoing bet with think-man: He wins if MH4 releases in any shape or form on PSV in 2013, I win if it doesn't.
