I loved the IT crowd. It was hilarious and completely unlike anything else on TV. RIP

But:

a) The IT Crowd isn't a bond film

b) Skyfall wasn't a comedy

c) Q wasn't funny anyway, he was just irritating. Bear in mind that I am comparing him to John Cleese.

How dare you!! You shouldn't compare him to John Cleese, you should compare him to Desmond Llewelyn, the real Q.

Very good points, but by comparing him to John Cleese you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Judge him as a new character and he's alright. Perhaps he'll be better in future films.

Now don't get me wrong. My attitude towards Ben Whishaw-Q is the same as that towards the rest of the film - he's a good character, and it's a great film. But I really don't feel like this is what Bond has ever been about. I wish they'd just call it by a different name.

I had to google the IT Crowd to see what it was.  Is that a playful jab at me for not being British and are you trying to prove once again that Americans like Daniel Craig more than people from the UK?  :p  I may not be an expert on Biritish sitcoms or from there, but I saw you compare Whishaw to John Cleese.  Any Bond fan know that the "real" Q is Desmond Lleweln who was Q up until The World Is Not Enough.  Cleese was only in two films...  Did you start watching the Brosnan films first?  This would explain why you like the Brosnan era and think of John Cleese as Q.  This is not me picking on you.  Just an observation.

My point is that I can understand where you are coming from about the Craig films being "un-Bondlike"if you indeed started watching the Brosnan films first.  There are times when I want to see Sean Connery or Roger Moore stroll into the office at MI6 and converse with Lois Mawell's Moneypenny, get instructions from Bernard Lee's M, and gadgets from Desmond Llewelyn's Q but that's not going to happen.  It is very different, but I prefer this era to the Brosnan one by a longshot.  Part of me probably didn't like that era because I thought that far too many things changed and I suspect that you may be going through the same thing.  The thing is that this series has, does, and probably will rock for quite some time.  I even like the Brosnan movies (just not as much as the others).  What a wonderful series of films this really is.

To finally answer your question about Whishaw, I thought that casting a young and geeky guy as Q makes sense in today's age because young people are by far the most proficient with new technology.  An older guy gets baffled by newer stuff (this older guy includes himself in this statement).  I also think that Fiennes will do a great job in his role as he is a tremendous actor and the verdict's still out on Naomie Harris...

I would just like to say that knowing your preferences that you will probably like Skyfall better than the last two, but probably not as much as the older films.  One thing is for sure though.  The direction is much better.  You and I won't fight over how many men Bond takes out in an elevator and both be wrong like we were in that scene from Quantum of Solace.  All of the quick cuts and camera shaking in  QoS was atrocious.

Spurge, I think that you are comparing apples and oranges here.  Those are super hero popcorn flicks.  I enjoy that sort of thing myself, but if that's what you expect out of Bond films you will be disappointed since he isn't a superhero.

BTW, that clip that Pezus left in the thread with the line about getting into a car with anyone... that line was ripped off from You Only Live Twice so next time someone thinks that Bond is ripping off Batman, they should do their research first.

Looking back, it was pretty funny how a couple of Bond fanatics like us had a nerdy debate about how many guys Bond fights in that elevator scene in QoS, only to find out that we were both wrong. I agree that will definately not be the case with Skyfall, since the filming is much better.

But I still don't like how the Bond formula/traditional elements are being tinkered with. Take the gunbarrel opening, for example. I don't know whether you heard this, but apparently the gunbarrel being placed at the end of QoS was supposed to symbolize that Bond has finally transitioned into the cool spy we all know and love. As strange as that sounds, this was pretty much the explanation given. But once again, the same thing was done for Skyfall's gunbarrel, so that sort of defies the purpose of Quantum's gunbarrel placement. Perhaps I'm getting confussed, but I thought that Craig became Bond by the end of Casino Royale.

Skyfall's title song is an improvement compared to the last few, but really isn't anything that special. I've listened to some of Skyfall's soundtrack online, and you're right, it's not as good as John Barry's work. It just seems that these recent Bonds are lacking all the various qualities that made the series so fun and appealing. Even the posters have been very lackluster. I just don't like they way Barbara Brocolli is handling the series now. Even though her father's Bond films weren't always perfect, they were overall still fairly entertaining, and usually had some sort of likeable qualities to them. Perhaps I'm a little too old-fashioned for my young age. But I just find that these recent Bond films have been lacking in various qualities in comparison to the older ones.
