Forums - Gaming Discussion - Xbox 720 or Playstation 4 will debut next year, says Activision

"We can’t really talk too much about next generation console plans, but I think it’s safe to say you have a Wii U coming out and there will be another new console coming and we expect that they’ll be very successful," Kotick said

where does Kotick says anything about next year?

Miz I think we're at the point where we don't even need to hear it be said. We know at least 1 is coming next year.

To challenge the Wii-U or play catch up with the Wii-U? lol

By releasing a console Fall 2013 (Halloween-Christmas) Nintendo WILL have some serious quality software ready on board that holiday (for Wii-U and 3DS). I don't know if it will be wise to have a console release without a killer 1P. In other words can rushing a console release be a good thing or bad thing?

As of right now I don't think we have any reason to believe Microsoft and Sony are in direct competition with nintendo. I don't fully know the capabilties of the system but basing it on what we've seen so far I think things will pan out similar to this gen; aside from the yearly releases (COD, FIfa), the Wii U is going to be recieving different support from 3rd parties. I.E you'll have to pick up a Orbis/Xbox8 if you want to play Mass Effect 4, Final Fantasy XV, GTA 6. Although I expect the WIi U to do really well in JApan and possibly recieve most of next -gens Japanese console games and many of them may even exclusive. Just not mainline FF.

I don't think so. The way I see it these games are releasing early for a reason.  If they didn't have big plans for later on they'd leave at least one, probably TLOU, for november. GOW should sell regardless of a new console and TLOU/Beyond/Sly aren't likely to do GOW-like numbers anyway, and we don't know what kind of legs they have. PS4 release wouldn't really be that detrimental to their performances. Even less so when you consider the what the Gaikai aquisition could mean; I think we'll see the PS3 library cross over to PS4 through a streaming service, so TLOU, Sly 4 etc. could easily be avaliable on the PS4 at its launch.

God of War is a fair point, I forgot GoW2 released after the PS3 had released worldwide and still managed okay sales.  Still the lowest of the trilogy though!

And while it's true that we've got dates for Sly and God of War early next year, I believe there's still nothing concrete for Beyond/The Last of Us, which could theoretically be subject to delays towards the end of the year.

You're right about Gaikai too, but I don't really know enough details about how that would work.  How would they get a system going where if you bought a boxed copy of the game, you'd be able to play that on PS4?

As a final aside, what do you think about Versus XIII?  I know you might not be following it too closely or anything, but it's genuinely my most anticipated game at this point.  PS3, PS4, Wii-U(?) or cancelled altogether?

Hmmm...  its the only thing that would make sense. He can't just be talking in general terms because is he then suggesting that there will only be 2 consoles next gen? lol

"Meanwhile, the Playstation 4 recently received reports of new dev kits being sent out to developers, with the final one coming sometime this next year.

With that being the case, logic implies the system would not be ready by the end of 2013, since dev kits are still heading out."

No, logic does not imply that.

Dev kits will be constantly delivered until just a few months before release. Everyone should know that.

Who is writing these stupid articles??

GOWA is actually tracking much higher than GOW3 in US pre orders (last time I checked it was 60k vs 20k in the same time period). I doubt the gap will be nearly that big at release but it's an indication of huge sales early on, meaning it won't need legs to make a good profit.

And while it's true that we've got dates for Sly and God of War early next year, I believe there's still nothing concrete for Beyond/The Last of Us, which could theoretically be subject to delays towards the end of the year.

I don't remember the last time Naughty Dog missed a release date, so there won't be delays. And they've shown so much of TLOU for so long I don't see it going another year without releasing. This isn't studio Japan lol. They will also be showing the next Uncharted in some capacity at E3 on Orbis so that'll give them even more of a reason to have TLOU out before then, so they can focus on the next project. (you can disregard that last bit since it's of course speculation). Beyond I could see releasing late 2013 but would it really matter? 1 million for that game will happen regardless and that's probably what they're banking on.

You're right about Gaikai too, but I don't really know enough details about how that would work.  How would they get a system going where if you bought a boxed copy of the game, you'd be able to play that on PS4?

It could look at your trophies, saves, anything. Downloaded titles are easy, and maybe for boxed copies you could put the disc into the system and you'd unlock it (of course this would only allowed to be done once for each disc). I don't think this is that big of a hurdle, it can't be too complex.

As a final aside, what do you think about Versus XIII?  I know you might not be following it too closely or anything, but it's genuinely my most anticipated game at this point.  PS3, PS4, Wii-U(?) or cancelled altogether?

I have absolutely no idea ;)

Judging by the amount of footage we're recieving for the Last of Us(new footage is being revealed next week) I think its safe to assume its coming out sooner (summer 2013) rather then later. Same with Pupetteer, as we've now recieved 3 trailers in the last 3 months. Maybe Beyond will be pushed back to Fall, but otherwise sony could quite easily get the rest of the big PS3 titles out and leave room for new console launch in november.

But I think what would be more compelling would be if they put the PS3 head to head with the Wii U/Xbox8. 2013 could be a massive year for the playstation, with another potential  price cut coming next year and a potential winter line up of: Beyond, The Last Guardian,  announced title (infamous 3 or Killzone4?) and all the big 3rd party content which I actually think will be released early 2014- Starwars 1313, Final Fantasy XIII-3 (western release), Metal Gear Ground zero.

On Final Fantasy verus XIII, I can see it being released at the Orbis's, but there'll definitely be a PS3 version, maybe a Wii U version aswell. I think people can stop worrying about the title now, we've got enough updates in the last few months to now its still in development. I'd say its simply a case of them starting the game and then realising they need to achieve more, so they're having to rework many things to meet their new ambitions (similar to the The Last Guardian). Just look at the gameplay trailer that was released a while back, something is missing. I'm not blown away... I think they're trying find and implement that something.

Indeed, there were numerous sources saying that Nintendo was providing developers with the final WiiU dev kits not too long before last E3, and it is launching in a few days.

I'm quite sure that both Sony and Microsoft will try to launch their consoles next year, not only because they don't want to give Nintendo too much advantage, but also because they don't want to launch later than the other.
