Forums - Website Topics - [Staff] The Monthly Ban Report - October

The premise behind this thread seems to be counterproductive. This will not serve to discourage anyone. Hell it is far more likely to incite not only those listed, but others as well to engage in the same behavior in the future. Your either creating a taunting situation, or engineering a reputation booster. Regardless of whether it turns out to be a negative or positive reinforcement situation the net result will be the same. They will double their efforts to get banned. Why care if they are going to bitch at least it shows they are trying to preserve their honor, or restore their image. Besides the draconian rules on these forums basically insure that better conversation is not going to be had.

This is all dodging the issue anyway. It isn't the posters, or the moderators for that matter that are at fault. The eight hundred pound gorilla in the room is the shitty forum rules that are in place. That discourage all but the most dispassionate of discussions. Ninety percent of the time that someone gets banned is, because they want to say something with real resonance, or they have been bored to death. That is why nobody really gives a shit about what they are missing while they are banned, but instead fixate on the insult, or the obvious notoriety it affords them, and the reason the latter is a reward is simple enough. Those getting banned are admired for doing what everyone else here wishes they had the balls to do in the first place. Rebels are adored when they stand up against mediocrity incarnate.

If you seriously want to address the banning situation. Then you need to address the problem of why it doesn't discourage posters in the first place. Namely they are getting out of at best monotony, and at worst what could be called a perverse form of sadomasochism. This place is fucking dull, and it gets duller over time. You need to view forums like a ongoing narrative. You need conflict, you need antagonists, and you need deep thinkers. You can't get by with just one. While I am on the subject, and I know most here probably won't grasp this, but this has to be said. There is nothing wrong with trolling, and there is nothing wrong with trolls.

Trolls incite reactions from members, and motivate them to step up their game. The more engaged they become the more creative they will become. The more creative they become. The more interesting the discussion will become, and that isn't just good for a forum. It is good for this site as a whole. The more freedom a community enjoys the more productive that community will become. If nothing I have said has caught your attention this should. You have hundreds of free writers here that can bring more people to this site, and the more people that come here. The more advertising revenue this site will enjoy. The rules as they stand don't just hurt posters they hurt the site.

You want to do something positive change the rules. I guarantee if you loosen up the restraints which are almost totalitarian in nature you will find that you have been holding this site back from actual greatness. If you doubt what I am saying then put it to a test. Give this community a week of no moderation. Let them beat the shit out of each other, and see the life flow back into this community. You can't seriously tell me you find this place to be exciting yourselves, and if you can manage to do that. Then I truly pity you, because this site a few years ago was a evolutionary explosion every week.

Give it a chance. You have nothing to lose, and everything to gain. Don't wait until the next generation starts, and don't buy into this is a cyclical kind of thing. That whole notion is fucking idiotic end of story. Given the plethora of Fanboys out there, and their single minded nature. They really will fight to the end of the world whether it is year two, or year six.

Even if you refuse to believe what I am telling you. Think about it this way. A single week without moderation would at least give this community a break from monotony. I know a radical notion indeed. This whole idea that we can actually have some fun.

^Haven't you noticed that people troll elsewhere and then come here for actual intelligent debate? The mod system here is excellent, there is no need to test loosening up, we have the best recipe this far. There are loopholes but that would only lead to think that it would be good to tighten, not loosen up.

Yup. I for one come here because the trolls are (eventually) weeded out and banished, leaving the rest of us to carry on not being dicks to each other.

The trolls have plenty of other websites with incredibly lax mod systems to choose from. I don't think there's anything wrong with the site going against the internet norm and seeking to rise above that petty bullshit.

I was banned unfairly

The first time I got banned was because I didn't quote the person I was talking to.  The next was because I was the only person that actually knew anything about tekken (yet, all the information about it can be looked up on wikipedia in 3 seconds).

Personally, i think the mods here need thicker skin.  To make things funnier, I doubt the guy is even still playing Tag 2.  But, as far as unfair banning goes, you're not the only one.  I'm still waiting for my "fair" ban.

I agree. Take N4G for example, no one cares what news is posted there, half the news are "why x should do y, "top 10 best x of this generation articles". They're low ranked on alexa. Glad I stopped going there.

I was once banned for telling the people who moaned about Bayonetta 2 that I loved the taste of their tears.

I regret nothing.
