The PS2 was practically  ALONE in the market, it achieved 150 m with no competition.

The PS3 has everything against it. That includes the 360, the Wii AND  a big portion of the gaming media (yeah those guys who for 3 whole years didn't think the biggest hardware failure in history was a big deal)

Did you even read the article or even other people's post on the first page.  Because if you did, then you would know that the article is comparing september 360 numbers to march ps3 numbers.  And it's not 70 million SOLD, its SHIPPED.  You and selnor seem to not have the slightest clue at how horrible this article is.

Its more that every release there is discrepencies for the numbers. VGC only really can obtain US numbers and most of EU fairly accurately. Theres alot of numbers they dont know.

Yes the site is definitely not reliable, but the point that I'm trying to make is that you think the ps3 is overtracked because of this article which clearly uses march ps3 shipments and september 360 shipments, unless there is another reason you believe it is overtracked.  We won't know how close VGC is until all of the companies report their shipments for each quarter and from there it's a guessing game of whether it is under or over tracked.  And sony haven't given its 2013 Q1 shipments yet, so we won't know how close they are until they do so.

Im going to take a guess it's overtracked by 1 million.   I could be wrong, we will see though, although as I think someone else stated, sony is combining ps2/ps3 sales so we still wont know. Xbox is undertracked by 1.1 million and I know everybody is throwing that number shipped around, but that is the only way you can base sells off of.  To companies, shipped = sale.   And i'm not just complaining about 360 being undertracked and ps3 being overtracked.  Microsoft was just talking about halo the other day and it is also over-tracked on here too depending on what titles they were including.  VGC is pretty consistent with over-tracking and under-tracking.  

I am aware that shipped = sale to companies, but that is just to retailers. VGC tracks sold to consumers, correct?

So, MS has shipped 70 million 360s to retailers and VGC has that the 360 has sold 68.9 to consumers. That would be about 1.1 million 360s at retailers, give or take a thousand.  That sounds about right to me.

I didn't read all of the comments, so these things may have already been pointed out...

Here's the first comment from that Gamesradar 'article':

"63.9 million reported by Sony and the end of their fiscal year March 31, 2012 compared with 70 million from September 30, 2012 reported by Microsoft.

Way to go genius."

On top of that, Microsoft has only shipped 70M units. So basically, it's all BS.

Yes yes, you didnt read everything i typed.  Im aware that they are using sony's shipped statement from march.  

By the way everyone talking about how the original XBOX was a failure and PS3 being a failure, profit wise they are both failures.  XBOX opened the door for Microsoft and introduced Halo, fable, forza, a long with XBOX Live.  With Xbox live and Achievements 360 set the bar for this generation so yes XBOX lost money but 360 made up for that.  

Sony sold 150 mil ps2's and yes it was sony's glory days for many of you, not really sure why but ok.  In my opinion as a gamer Sony's glory days are now and not for the ps2. PS2 may have been a goliath in sells but PS3 has way more quality games in my opinion than the ps2.  While sony has made a lot mistakes and has lost a lot of money on the PS3 i still dont see it as a failure as the games are good.  

So yes XBOX and PS3 is a failure but they both still had good things that came out of them.  The main thing sony can learn from this is dont make the same mistake twice, and that is not up to you all defending them and fighting whch console is better, they need to be better with their own business.

I completely agree with what you say here, but keep in mind that I was only pointing out how you kept saying it was overtracked by 3m. You may see that as someone being defensive, or you may see it as someone correcting you.

As everyone is being completely defensive in this thread haha  I find it hilarious people are still fighting over 6-7 year old technology.  People can look at this generation with different cases in who wins and loses.  If I picked this generation on who won I would say Nintendo, MS, and Sony last.  Nintendo gained a lot of market and there 1st party software sold crazy good.  Microsoft stole a lot of Sony's fanbase and the 360 a long with xbox live has made a lot of profits.  Sony has lost a lot of money and lost a lot of ground to microsoft.  In the end Sony will probably end up selling more than the 360 because it will be on the market longer, but it doesnt change that MS was a success this generation.  Does that mean 360 and nintendo is better? No it does not.  From a business perspective, yes.  But as I see none of us is in any three of these businesses I dont really understand why we argueing who sold more.  Just because something sold more doesnt mean it's more successful.  For example, you sale 5 ford focus cars, and you make how much money and how much profits?  well then you sale one lamborghini and you make how much money and profits?  Which one is more successful and why?

I find it hilarious how people try and spin this gen as some kind of amazing performance by Sony.  The PS3 has been an unmitigated distater on every business measure you can think of.... every single one.

I'm out of this thread though, nothing good will come of it.  Talking to Sony fans on this topic is like beating your head against a stoine wall.  They refuse the see the painfully bleeding obvious.

Just because PS3 has sold less than half of what PS2 so far is disasterous is it!? If it's so bad, sony would off given up by now. 66 million is pretty good for a disaster ain't it? Sony should of continued to dominate the gaming industry but they didn't, so does it matter? not really. Sony has it's fanbase, Nintendo has it's fanbase and so does microsoft now, at least it ain't a 2 horse race between sony and nintendo, which it would be if xbox 360 failed.

Yes it is.  This is about the business aspects of it.  This has nothing to do with "fans" and everything to do with dollars, yen and marketshare. It is a disaster from a business perspective, that is undenaible I'm afraid.  Not saying they cant recover next gen, but this gen the PS3 IS a business disaster. 


Xbox 360 is no cash cow either. RROD epidemic cost MS over $1billion.

Anyway look at it this way, as a console in 3rd place, the PS3 is extremely successful. PS3 is the first console to survive that 3rd place position and it might even move to to 2nd before the end of this gen.

Each console this generation faild in some aspect. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER PS2.

I agree and I believe someone should make a thread about the over-tracked numbers on VGC because honestly I find this to be an embarrassment to VGC as they over-tracked by 3 million.  Everytime we hear the REAL numbers it seems to always be way off
