"Anfield Used to have that support" ????????

That must be at least 10 years old. I recognize that veteran guy from the English national team, name espaces me, but in this video he seems to be in his teens almost.

2008 v Juventus.

Oh. I guess he's aged fast then.

Are u a Liverpool fan?

I agree that supporters can be a little quiet at times, but that's mostly when their team is losing and not playing well, which was funnily enough, Man City last night.

i think it didn't help to have only seats nowadays. better to have no riots but not so good to get enough real fans who really care about their club and not only people with money who are fans as long as they see success.

a perfect example in germany is bayern munich, those fans are also boring as hell and that club has the most fans who are only fans because of the success. even a stadium with 15k fans in germany has a better atmosphere as a full bayern munich stadium.

Please places like Anfield and St James Park have some of the best supporters in the world. The Kop at Anfield especially on a European night is like nothing else. Man City and Chelsea not so much mainly due to the large number of glory hunters.

Also lower league football in England has pretty good fans.

I'm a Liverpool fan by the way.

There is still frustration and resentment at those places at state of modern game.  When I was at Saint James guy next to me stated "forty quid? should be payin us ta watch this bollox" (did not help Manchester United were winning).  Friend of mine use to go to Anfield every home match, now due to high costs he watches in the pub majority of weeks.  The kop was twice the size it is now when it was terrace and more affordable (course...the cramped conditions did lead to the "yellow mersey" so can see why some folks might be turned off...but sod them all. ;) )

I don't mock or belittle the English.  They have a proud history in the sport, and the costs has grown so high can not expect working class to show up like they use to.

@Kowe

can't quote at work. This site is just a mess.

YNWA is always cool, but this was just right before a game. During the game, there is no real support other than applause.

@slime

It takes me 4 hours to get to Dortmund. There are quite a few clubs that are in my region though.

Have to agree with this, English fans are nothing compared to German in terms of noise, even at Anfield, which as someone pointed out is great for YNWA but can be as subdued as anywhere else later on into the game, particulalry with the muck they've had to endure in recent seasons. To be outsung by away fans is always embarrassing, no matter what's happening on the pitch. Fans seem to get noisier the further East you go: awful in Ireland, bad in England, better in Spain, better again in Germany, great in Greece and Eastern Europe (apart from the violence) and MENTAL in Turkey

I have the feeling, and correct me when I am wrong, that Greece and Turkey really do have some awesome fans, but just a hand full of club. Panathinaikos / Olympiakos in Greece and the Gala / Fenerbahce in Turkey. While the Ultras are more spread in Germany, except the corporate clubs (Hoffenheim, Leverkusen, Wolfsburg, Ingolstadt and soon Leipzig).

Austria has some good supporters as well.
Anyway, England lost its touch withtheir supporters

I want to go to Europe just to see the synchronized fans and cheers. I don't know how it'll be compared on volume, but I think with fan participation, soccer wins big.

Annnnnyyywayyyy

Perhaps this great support can drive a German league team on to actually win something at some point.

Its been a while.

and that is coming from a liverpool supporter?

Seriously though, ManCity, Chelsea, Arsenal and pretty much every club in England is now pushed by some multi-billionaire somewhere in the east.
ManCity spend 900 million Euro (!!!) in the past years, while German Clubs just don't do that.

Look at Kagawa and ManU. Dortmund paid 350k Euro 2 years ago. ManU paid 16 million to Dortmund now. ManCity has a higher loss than revenue (!!!). Financial FairPlay will hurt some English clubs, if they actually push that through in 2013.

Last won it in 2005, which was the 5th time. Finalists in 2007.

The spending is just how it is. It's life.  If you have seen the incredible plans Man City have for the area of the stadium and the local community you will see how it isn't always just a vanity trip. That club will have huge revenues soon and a stream of young talent.  And you say German clubs just don't do that, you mean can't. If a billionaire walked in then they would take the cash, no question.

Kowe, I really like your financial background and enjoy your threads. I agree with you 99%  of the time. It is cool to disagree with you when it comes to football.

In Germany there is a rule called "50+1". No club is allowed to have an investor that leads a club. 50+1 means that  51% of the club belongs to the members of a club, which are the fans and supporters. That is one reason why you don't see these spendings in Germany. The fams in Germany are well organised and do protests against anyone who wants to cancel this rule.

Cologne:

Bremen

Bochum

Hamburg

Nürnberg

Dortmund

Hannover wanted to welcome investors, but the 36 professional teams in Germany denied his request to kill the 50+1 rule with 32 : 1 votes! So Germany and the supporters are fighting against it. That is a fight the English supporters lost years ago.

Another point is that the German Bundesliga has VERY high standards when it comes to the financials of a club. The losses Man City made are not sustainable. As a consequence ManCity would be relegated in the 3rd league in Germany. Actually Dortmund was inches away to be relegated in 2005 / 2006, because of their financial situation.

So the German league could have a scenario just like the English league, we are just fighting against it. And for good I must say. The English premier League has a debt of 4 billion Euros (!!!) and loses about 500 million every year. The German Bundesliga has basically no debt. The situation in England just can't be healthy.

If financial fairplay becomes reality in 2013, just like the UEFA said, you will see a turnaround in Europe.
