Forums - Website Topics - VGChartz Forum Changes

I am in the HELL NO! camp for a like button.... ultimately a like button is of no use unless you need to order things by number of likes, or else hide things that get disliked, but both of those would ruin the flow of a thread.

I know you are probably not going to agree, but please give back the ability to colour text in the RTE.

I agree on cutting out some of the seperate forums, the tag feature sounds sensible (as long as you make a set list for tags)

I think what Millenium was asking earlier was to simply block videos from walls... I would say a wall only needs to have text and hyperlink options, I would guess some of the heavy wall posters would disagree though. (are the current wall post rules just a copy of the quick reply box?)

I guess neither of these will be an issue now, but badges and now playing sections have been taking up ridiculous amounts of vertical forum space for a while now, add to that the long avatar issue and it's rare I can even fit a full 2 posts on my screen at once. Obviously badges and game collections are going so that will save space, but please don't replace it with anything else... Personally I would like to see it possible to fit 3 posts on my screen at once (ie within 700px... assuming the posts themselves are short enough of course).

Oh and this is not restricted to just the forums, but please make it possible to go to the important areas of the site from a site-wide menu. (I know the site is in transition or whatever, but currently going to the main homepage only has a single top-level link to the forums)

How about becoming one with gamereview again   Edit btw about those badges an auto update would be nice

Please, do not get rid of sub-forums.

I was looking through hot-topics just now (which has all the forums) and I saw nearly all Wii-U threads and Vita threads. Neither of which I'm interested in. Sub-forums allow me to filter threads with one click, much more quicker & streamlined than a search function.

No sub-forums can still be the default setting (like hot-topics), but please give us the option (options are always good) to utilize the sub-forums.

Also make them easier to navigate through. In the old days, you could bring a drop-down-menu down and click on whatever forum to go through. You could go from forum to forum in one click. Now you have to go to the forum index and then go to the forum. It's too slow.

The forums should just be:
- Sales
- Gaming
- Playstation / Sony
- Xbox / Microsoft
- Nintendo
- Off-Topic
- Website

I think...no, I'm certain the majority prefers this method as opposed to getting rid of them altogether.

Again, just make them an option. We can still have hot topics as the default page.

I don't think it's going to stifle conversation at all. It worked pretty well back in the day. And people can still use hot topics when they please. And people can easily find threads that may be a few days old and have bumped off of the first few pages of hot-topics.

Now, with no sub-forums. A viewer may get frustrated as he looks through all the top threads & can never find one that interests him because they're all about Nintendo/Microsoft/Sony. Sub-forums remedy this.

A tag function just won't work as well as subforums. You'll have people typing different spelling for the same thing. (PS3 vs Playstation). You could have mispellings. And you could have people not using the tag function at all. Not to mention searching through tags is still searching. You'll have to go to a bar and enter information and press search. MUCH slower than a simple click-to-go sub-forum drop-down-menu.

Please keep sub-forums!

  • Game adding system
  • HTML functionality on walls
  • picture sizes in signature and avatars
  • Ability to keep posting in a locked thread via a rather easy trick...

  • I've addressed the game adding.
  • HTML functionality - such as what?
  • Picture sizes - please explain, you want bigger / smaller?
  • Will make a note of this bug.
  • Cheers.
  • Removal of ability to post videos (Especially autoplay) and pictures on the walls, it's a nuisance (imo).
  • Limit the Avatar sizes to the standard 200px x 200px (Or the 120px x 120px if you will)
  • Limit the pictures in Signatures to be no larger than 755px x 200px, the huge ones are just terribly detrimental when browsing this lovely site on mobile devices (imo).
  • Cheers.

Edit: I support the idea of dumping most (if not all) of the subforums.

I'll be honest, I've always disliked square avatars so I don't think a limit like that would be very good. Maybe just limit the length of the avatar so it's not excessivly long. One of the things I really like about this site is the ability to have a longer avatar.

Just remember that other than RolStoppable and a few other patriarchs that stop by occassionally you have a whole new set of posters. You may want the old posters like tads12, truckosaurus, carl, hatmoza, and the hundreds of other old posters that only Kantor would know to come back, but I think that is wishful thinking. I think this hall started with changing the site up. Change, then change again the next year, then again the nxt year, and now again. Not sure if you are making or losing money with all your changes, but you did lose a lot of active customers. They are now members on other sites, where they have found homes and learned to enjoy. People like to blame many things, but the original culprit of why the site went down is more change. Last year before any of the new active members were active a bunch of big members left. Same thing happened with the change before that.

Long story short.... make your current active members happy before you try to save or bring back those who left or are leaving.

It's not general change. It's how it's changed. Some change is good. Some is bad.

I agree with the others that the complete removal of subforums could make the site more confusing to navigate. But given that your goal is to make the site more simple, you could reduce them to 4.

+games

+hardware / manufacturers

+about the site

+off-topic

Also Hot-Topics, Latest Topics and My Topics are very helpful to follow what's going on, as well as the forum Buddy (although the promised but never accomplished option to fix it on top of the screen would be welcomed).

The removal of our games collection and such is sad, but then, that's what the other site is for.

Oh, and as others have said, chould we have the color texting and other features back?

Just my 2 cents too.

Please excuse my bad English.

The forum features now, yes I would say they are probably at the best they have been.

As I believe someone said during the minor changes last Christmas: 'We want the sales and data features of VGC 1.0, with the game database of 2.0 and the forum and social features of 3.0' (paraphrased of course, can't recall the exact quote)

Tagging threads can be a mighty tool, if filtering over tags is well implemented. In that case no subforums are needed, as tags are better for this job.

I agree that we can rid of the stuff under Online/Offline (whoevver said that).

Bring back a graphing tool for sales data, so that everyone can create a graph for a partition of data he is interested in.

Moreorless, everyone is happy with the current setup, although there are a few subforums that could be cut. This is the current setup, with what I think should be cut. With what I think, the site would go from 21 subforums to 9/10.

Gaming Discussion
Sony
Nintendo
Microsoft
PC
Mobile (could probably be merged with PC section)
MMO (could probably be cut, as there isn't usually many posts here)
Online Gaming (there are a few important threads, such as the leagues/tournaments, although the section as a whole isn't too important)
Game Specific Boards (definitely cut)

Latest Charts
Sales Discussion (I think you should consolidate both sections into one Sales section, but it's entirely up to you as I can see the significance of both)

Announcements (this should stay and be kept at the top at all times; limit topic creation to mods/admins only)
Website Issues (Consolidate into one section called Website Issues/Suggestions)
Website Feedback (Consolidate into one section called Website Issues/Suggestions)
Introduce Yourself (I don't really see the need for this, but it could be important)

General Discussion
Movies Discussion (cut)
Music Discussion (cut)
Sports Discussion (cut)
Politics Discussion (cut)
NSFW Discussion (I say keep it just for a section to sort out the riffraff topics, but it's up to you)

Forum navigation is broken. I like the old way where i can browse forums from the top menu shortcuts. Now, I have to go to forum listings every time I need to switch forum.

Do we even need the forums to be separate? The thought behind this was that we can split conversations and allow people to talk to people about a specific subject in some kind of shielded environment but really the community was never big enough to support this so it just seems to have stifled conversation in reality. My idea would be that all threads would be in one forum and we could use a tag / search to find specific ones of interest?

It would be a bit too chaotic with everything crammed together. Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, and Gaming sections are strong enough. Perhaps Sales could be rolled back into "Gaming-General", and an "Other" section to merge MMOs, PC, and mobile. One Website subforum and one Off Topic, with quicker navigation between them.

The tags would have to be super-intuitive, like something on the side of the forum page to immediately reduce to all threads tagged "Nintendo," and even then, can we count on people to tag as effectively as the subdivisions.

Primarily, glitches must be addressed. The whole "This User's Post Has Been Removed" thing should have been dealt with a year ago.
